The Penn State Society for the Study of Religion is hosting a seminar Thursday, Nov. 10, from 12:15-1:15 pm in 240 Borland! Dr. Rob Jones will present “Reimagining Jewish Apocalyptic Literature.” All are invited! A light lunch will be served; the zoom link is available upon request (please email tuh14@psu.edu if interested).
Rob Jones completed a Ph.D. in Religious Studies at McMaster University in 2020. His dissertation focused on representations of the Jewish priesthood, sacrificial system, and temple in the Aramaic writings from Qumran. It has been accepted for publication in Brill’s Studies on the Texts of the Desert of Judah (STDJ) series. Rob is now beginning a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Penn State University, where he will be working on a project that considers how the Aramaic writings from Qumran can inform our understanding of Hellenistic-era Jewish apocalyptic literature. This lecture will serve as an introduction to his postdoctoral project. Rob will discuss the relation of early Jewish apocalyptic literature to a broader Aramaic scribal tradition that flourished in the late Persian and Hellenistic periods.
