Abstract

Robustly measuring how additional language (LX) acquisition occurs in instructed contexts is both straightforward and complex. It is straightforward in the sense that, as with all areas of empirical research, the methods make the difference. Likewise, it is complex given how multiple variables cannot be controlled for, complicating the design and choice of method(s). A broad understanding of research methods in instructed second language acquisition (ISLA) is essential to design strong studies, optimize learning opportunities, and move the field forward. In this workshop, we will systematically review ISLA research methods in an accessible and demystifying way at macro and micro levels. Participants are encouraged to bring an ISLA research project to the workshop—regardless of the stage at which their project is—for reflection and applied practice. The goals of this workshop are for each participant to achieve an in-depth understanding of ISLA research methods and to have a methodological design plan for their own ISLA empirical project.

We will begin by operationalizing key research questions and overarching goals in ISLA (theoretical, empirical, and applied), providing (re)orienting questions with which participants’ proposed ISLA research projects will be examined. We will briefly move through the main types of ISLA research—quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and replication research—before exploring in detail the ways ISLA research is unique. We will then discuss the most impactful considerations that can impact ISLA research design, such as implementation and interpretation across methodological approaches, and provide concrete, applicable suggestions to ensure empirical rigor. We will also review instructional intervention designs for specific skills and competencies in ISLA. Finally, we will review the principal ways of sharing ISLA research so that it serves our communities and beyond, as well as identify ideal outlets for participants’ planned ISLA research projects. Particular attention will be given to open-access options for researchers.
