Randumb Fact #9: In Paris, there are more dogs than there are children, and they seem to be treated with equal amounts of pampering. Collectively, Parisians spend nearly $500,000 every day on health and grooming for their pets.

Dogs are truly man’s best friends, but in Paris best friend is taken to a whole other level. In Paris, we see that the Parisians are truly caring towards their pets, spending nearly half a million dollars just to make sure their dogs are groomed and cared for. Parisians take care of their dogs just like our parents take care of us. Many people may think that spending this much money is OUTRAGEOUS but let’s think about our own situation. How many of us are paying a great amount of money to go to college? Now, our parents could have told us not to go to college, or go to a cheaper college, but they didn’t. They wanted us to have the best opportunities at our disposable and they weren’t willing to let money get in the way, so, in a sense, I understand why these Parisians spend a lot of money on their pets. They may not have children of their own, or they may have a large amount of money at their disposal, and they look at their dogs as their own children.
When I first read this statement, I was kind of shocked how much money these Parisians were willing to spend every day on their dogs, but at the same time, I understand. Dogs are a big responsibility and just like human beings, they deserve to be taken care of properly. Now, does this mean that we should clean out our entire bank accounts? No, we can still take care of our pets in an economically manageable way. We have to find the balance between the two and ensure that we are doing everything we can to make sure that our pets are well taken care of and feeling their upmost best! So if you’re ever thinking about getting a pet, make sure that you know that YOU are responsible for that animal and just like you, they need to be taken care of as well.

  1. It’s interesting to observe human behavior when it comes to their pets. Indeed, it seems that we sometimes care for animals more than we care for each other. Consider the commercials you see on TV, exposing the horror some of these animals face. The commercials featuring abused animals in shelters tend to illicit sadness and pity from us even more than the commercials exposing childhood hunger for humans do. Animals have a really special place in our society. In Paris’ culture, I would imagine that a dog lives a very pampered life.

  2. I was very surprised to know there are more dogs in Paris than children. I knew that Parisians were a large dog community but I didn’t know the sheer number of dogs in Paris. As for the spending part, that doesn’t surprise me as much as I have been to Paris and have seen how well treated the dogs are. Personally, I don’t think there is a problem with the amount of spending on pets. Some people don’t want to have children and get a pet instead but still treat it like a child, which is perfectly acceptable. I feel that if you have a pet, it should be treated well; it doesn’t have to be completely pampered like the dogs in Paris, but it should still be able to have a good life.
