Washable: An interactive shower assistant to increase autonomy in bathingAll teenagers desire independence as they approach adulthood, but this goal can be particularly challenging for young adults with cognitive disabilities. We have designed our product, Washable, to facilitate autonomy in one of the most fundamental and intimate areas: personal hygiene. Our target user group is teenagers and young adults who are able to perform the necessary actions of showering or bathing but require prompting from a caretaker to get through all the steps and to get an adequate quality of cleaning. We intend our product to supplement or replace the caretaker’s role in bathing in order to reduce the demand on caretakers and increase users’ autonomy in bathing.

Our product is an interactive shower assistant that guides users through the bathing process as they perform it themselves. The product features a screen that provides visual, text, and audio cues to prompt the user through the steps of the shower. The walk-through is highly customizable and allows users to adjust the included steps, their order and duration, and even the avatar that appears in the visual cues. The project also functions as an automatic dispenser for products like soap and shampoo in order to address both cognitive and motor difficulties.

With Washable, we aspire to remove barriers in personal hygiene by reframing the bathing experience. Everyone deserves a chance to feel clean and self-sufficient, and we are extremely excited to help make that happen!
