Timing and Alert System for Students with Autism

Duke University

Drew Levy, Elizabeth Yonko, Karolina DiStasi

Our client is a high school student with autism spectrum disorder, which affects his ability to communicate verbally with his teacher and his perception of timing and routines. While he has access to assistive communication devices at school, he is not motivated to use these devices and does not find them engaging. As a result, he does not communicate his need to use the bathroom to his teacher and has accidents in class. To facilitate the communication between student and teacher and to help the student with the routine of going to the bathroom, we created an interactive program that prompts him about his need to use the bathroom and alerts the teacher when he indicates that he needs to go. We hope that this device will improve student-teacher communication and reduce the number of bathroom-related accidents at school.
