In this video clip, a fly in the family Syrphidae visits some hyssop flowers near the Limestone Cave in the children’s garden in The Arboretum at Penn State. I grew up calling these gentle little pollinators “sweat bees,” a term more properly applied to bees in the family Halictidae. Syrphid flies are also known as hoverflies, for their impressive flight ability, and flower flies, for their importance as pollinators. Background music contributed by enthusiastic young garden visitors!
