The next chilling haunted place is The Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts. In 1892, there were a family living there with the two parents, two young girls, and the maid. One of the girls was away at a sleepover when the two parents were murdered with an axe in the house. Throughout the town it was believed that little Lizzie was the culprit due to her hatred of her step mother and she was seen destroying the dress she was wearing that day in a fire. The murders are called the “Borden Murders” and the house has not been changed, refurbished, or deconstructed since that day in 1892. Though Lizzie was tried in court, the evidence collected wasn’t enough to give the jury the ability to have not a single doubt about her committing the murders. However, the rest of the town was still convinced she was the murderer leading to the case forever being unsolved.
The house is ordained with photos of the family, including the photos of their death which is definitely creepy. According to a tour guide, she has felt many paranormal moments including tugging of her hair, moving objects, sounds of running children in the attic and many other eerie events. It is believed if you place a few coins on Mr Borden’s dresser he will leave you alone because he was a wealthy miser at the time of his death. Many people explain an unexplainable sense of anger when you enter the home. This could very easily be the spirits taking control of the emotions of the visitors, perhaps trying to scare them off.
Lizzie lived in that house until her death in 1927, around 30 years after the murders had taken place. She died in the house like her father and step mother. If the spirits of the family really are there I am sure it is an interesting afterlife to say the least. Despite the allure of the murders, it is a very sad story. Lizzie’s sister never came back to the house after the event and it was rumored that they fell out of touch for the rest of their lives. If Lizzie really was innocent it would be a lonely life for her until her death with an entire town convinced you are a murderer on the loose.
The house itself it still in good conditions and the owners wanted to be able to preserve the history of the house. The trial was an infamous trial throughout New England at the time. Everyone knew about the Borden murders. The whole town showed up to the trial and ever since the house has lived in infamy. The house itself is definitely eerie. The old furniture and the old photos of the former family definitely make it real and not just a scary ghost story to tell around a camp fire. I definitely wouldn’t be able to stay over at the house like some guests who take full advantage of the bed and breakfast.

If anywhere in the world would be haunted, it would definitely be the Borden House. An event this infamous is sure to spawn a reputation for mysterious happenings and hauntings. I was unaware before this post that Lizzie Borden was never convicted of the crimes. It seems very odd that she proceeded to simply live in the house where she potentially murdered her own family. It is very good that the house was preserved so as to be faithful to its original design, though I would also stay away from the bed and breakfast. This was a great passion blog! I honestly never knew that there were so many famous haunted places in New England, and it was always intriguing to hear the real backstories of these locations and their associated legends.

That was certainly a creepy and disturbing (and sad) story to hear about. Once again, I got some chills reading about this haunted place, and the fact that the house still has furniture and pictures of the family adds to the uneasy feeling I got reading about it. Even though they offer tours, I don’t think you’ll find me anywhere near that house.
Overall, I have really enjoyed reading your posts. I had never heard of these haunted locations before, so it was a unique experience to read and learn about them, but from a distance. 🙂 Your posts never failed to give me shivers down my spine – great work!

This is such a cool post! I have heard a little bit about the Borden case, but I definitely did not know you could visit the house. I also had no idea that Lizzie died in the house later in her life, how ironic if she truly did kill her parents. In that case, I would 100% believe the paranormal events that people have said occur in the house. I love horror and paranormal stuff so I might have to take a trip up to the Borden house once the pandemic is over.

I really enjoyed your post! I remember first being made aware of Lizzie Borden in elementary school when kids were trying to scare each other with the rhyme. As I got older, I looked more into the murders and seemingly paranormal activity that goes on in the house. I have probably seen countless videos whether it be on youtube or on tv of paranormal investigators staking out the house and searching for evidence of the undead. I’m not sure if Lizzie is to blame for the atrocity, but the house definitely feels like its haunted.

The Lizzie Borden House. I have never heard of this location, but I am now definitely intrigued! This is my first time reading one of your posts and I firstly have to say that I absolutely admire your topic of abandoned and haunted locations in New England; and secondly, that this post was intriguingly disturbing. I was engaged every step of the way and left in contemplation, confusion, and suspense; gauging Lizzie’s perspective and how sad her life probably was if she was not the murderer, but also questioning her psychological predisposition in the likelihood that was. Cool post!
