This weekend is the Stanford Invite arguably the biggest tournament of the college ultimate frisbee season. With a long list of perennial powerhouses in attendance such as Pittsburg, Oregon, Florida State and Washington all coming in as number one seeds in there respective pools. These games will serve as the final chance to earn bids for their regions in hopes to make their odds of going to nationals slightly easier.
Rutgers looks to clear doubts.
Since reconstruction of the regional boundaries in 2007 the Metro East has been the joke of college ultimate. In the past 8 years the region hasn’t had a top 50 (Regular Season rankings) represent them at nationals. This leaves the team with a lot to prove on the national stage and tournament like Stanford is certainly the place to rid the region of all of its doubters. Rutgers comes in as the last seed in pool A and will need at least one upset win in order to advance to the Pre-Quaters. The team is full of players from last years Garden State squad who made a regionals surge in last years Mid-Alantic Club Regionals tournament. They should use that experience plus what they learned form playing against last years national talent.
Pitt and Oregon Look to Dominate
Pittsburg and Oregon both come into the tournament with a tournament win each, Oregon at President Invite and Pittsburg winning Florida Warm-Up. These two are the favorites to end up in the finals and give the fans the match of the current number 1 and 2 ranked teams in the nation. Each team is extremely deep with Star talent and promising youth. Though Oregon as looked supporting ass looked a lot more polished in their semi-final and finals wins at President Invite with out their Star player Dylan Freechild who won the Callahan in 2013 (Equivalent to the Heisman in college football). Both teams a strong enough to blow through saturdays pool play untouched but anything could happen during Bracket play on Sunday.
