As an avid traveler, I have had the opportunity to learn about how countries are influenced by different cultures around the world. It is always interesting to see how these countries have incorporated the culture into their life and made it their own. One of these many countries is Singapore. They have many South Asian and Eurasian influences, and that is one of the reasons we decided to go visit. We wanted to be able to see how these different influences have come together to create a unique culture. We went there on vacation (we also stopped by Malaysia, but that is for the next post) and I will be discussing some of the places to visit and food to try.
One of the first places we went to was Universal Studios. While my siblings and I were all under 10, it does not become less enjoyable as you get older. While some people may not see a point in going because there is a Universal Studios right here in Orlando, there are some differences. There are two rides that are unique to Singapore. It is also smaller, so you can take a day trip, and be able to do different things on the other days. Another fun place to visit is the Gardens by the Bay. This isn’t your typical garden. There are different attractions within it, and each attraction has its own theme. There is the Kingfisher Wetlands,
and this is for people who love bird watching. There is the Cloud Forest, and this features an indoor waterfall, exotic plants, and has aerial walkways. There is also Floral Fantasy, Flower Dome, Supertree Observatory, and many more.
There is also delicious food and that is where you mainly see the cultural influences. I will be mainly talking about two dishes that I have tried. The first is Satay. This is grilled meat (chicken, pork, beef, etc.) and you dip it into peanut sauce. The char on the grilled meat combined with the different spices in the peanut sauce (ginger, lime soy sauce, and garlic) produces amazing flavor. The other dish is Roti Prata. This is originally an Indian dish, but it is popular in Singapore. It is a type of bread that is flaky (it is made without egg) and can be eaten with different types of curries, vegetables, or meat. It is a universal dish because of the way it can be combined with different foods.
I am aware that I say this in every blog, but I am always grateful for the opportunity to be able to explore so many different countries and cultures. Being able to visit different places and learn about them has made me more appreciative of all cultures. If you ever get the chance to go to Singapore, definitely take advantage of the opportunity.
