In Malaysia, the Myanmar Muslim refugee community as well as other refugee ethnic groups know Rashidah. When she decided to quit UNHCR in 2017, she had the vision to help her refugee community. She founded MMRC, the Myanmar Muslim Refugee Community (MMRC), to not only create a voice for what the government sees as “illegal” migrants but create a safe space for women and other ethnic groups that seek protection and support. Rashida told me “We don’t go to UNHCR [for help]. They ask for help from us!” With an established network with the Malaysian people, from doctors to educators and the police, Rashida has authorized her organization as a community support system that is driven by respect for the human dignity for all.
