Jakarta Bersatu

“Bersatu” is the Indonesian word for “United”. This means bringing together people from different backgrounds, countries and cultures. This “Unitedness” is an indication of Jakarta Berastu’s efforts for gender equity and social cohesion between refugees and host communities.

Jakarta Berastu took off from a transformative leadership action program held by Same Skies in 2020. Now it is working as an independent project fueled and led by refugees in Indonesia. The RLO is one of the few supporting refugees’ livelihoods by offering programs for skills development, entrepreneurship, and product development. Jakarta Berastu follows an evidence-based approach whereby their work is informed by community needs as well as local capacities. Their goal is to create economic opportunities for refugees who are left out of the labor market in Indonesia due to its unfavorable refugee policies. Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 Convention and therefore does not recognize refugees rights to basic services.

This RLO focuses on craft, utilizing their access to sewing machines, fabrics, as well as local knowledge on jewelry to develop products that can enter the local host country market. During the COVID-19, they successfully deployed 7 training modules in the period of 7 months. The modules cover subjects such as product design, human resources, financial management, ethics and communication, critical thinking, innovation, and sustainability. These modules are designed to help refugees with product development and business management, setting them up for success.
