James Cannon, a senior here at Penn State Abington has been making big moves in his music career. Writing songs over the years provided him with the tools to release his first EP, “Schizophrenic Jukebox”. I caught up with James to find out when music became a big part of his life, and information regarding his upcoming live performances.
“My dad broke his leg the summer of my 8th grade year, He had to lay around most of the time, so he thought it’d be a cool bonding experience to teach me guitar. He taught me my first few chords and got me started with guitar and music theory. I’ve loved playing ever since.” said James. At the end of his middle school years James was in his first band. “I played guitar in this pop rock band. We played to our moms mostly haha, but it was cool getting on stages and playing live for the first time. ” he recalled. In high school he played bass for a rock based band.
James is influenced by Ed Sheeran, John Mayer and Coldplay to name a few. After writing original songs, filling notebook after notebook, he knew he wanted to release his music to the public. “For “Schizophrenic Jukebox,” I just took the best of the material I had. They each have their own kind of individual feel, but I always think you should just play what feels right, even if it’s all over the place. If it connects with you it’ll connect with someone else.” James recorded his EP in his friend’s basement and right here on campus, giving him something to remember his college experience for years to come.
James also plays live gigs, performing his original songs along with some covers. If you want to see James perform you can see him at The Grape Room in Manayunk on March 4th (21+) and at the Trocadero in Philadelphia on March 12th (all ages).
