LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. — Stepping onto a college court or field for an athletic event is a sensational experience. From the pre-game adrenaline to the feeling of pride as you watch your team succeed, playing a sport provides many special moments for student athletes.
However, few get to share this experience with a family member by their side.
For Bella Buwawa and Pasepa Buwawa Driso, the Penn State Fayette volleyball team has not only provided them the opportunity to compete on a higher level of athletics, but they also get to experience this together as sisters.
Paspea, a fourth-year student, and Bella, a first-year student are both talented athletes, with a special spark for success as they compete together and motivate one another.
“I’ve only gotten to play with my sister once, and that was my senior year of high school,” said Pasepa. “Playing with her now means a lot, because I know no matter what, we always have each other’s back on the court.”
“Playing with Pasepa makes me want to push myself,” said Bella, thinking about her time on the court. “There are moments when I’m slacking and she can see it. She keeps me in check.”
The sisters have shown immense talent and leadership on the year’s volleyball team, and they weigh in on how being on it has affected them personally.
“It helps me let go and unwind. I’m having fun playing with people who have the same love for the sport,” Pasepa told me. “My favorite thing about the team is how we all push each other to perform our best!”
Bella spoke of the social impact saying, “I meet someone new every day. It’s nice to know people here at Fayette.” She then commends her teammates for the hard work they put into the sport. “This year feels promising. There’s talent on the team, and the girls have been putting in their own individual strengths.”
The team is currently 5-7 overall and 3-2 within conference play.
Upcoming home games include Saturday, October 1st as they face Penn State Shenango, and Wednesday, October 5th as they face Penn State Beaver. The October 5th game will also be Pink Out night.
Be sure to come out to support the ladies throughout the rest of the volleyball season!
