Sept. 27, 2024 – Penn State students visited the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh to see the highly acclaimed musical “Hamilton.” The show did not disappoint, having been extremely parallel to a performance on Broadway.
Displayed to the audience was an elaborate set, complete with a revolving circle in the center of the stage for certain songs with moving stage pieces that simultaneously resemble both balconies and stairways. The show was a full house and was proven to be just as successful as it is described in the media.
“Hamilton” is a musical that involves exactly what one would assume; the life and events revolving around Alexander Hamilton. This musical takes place during the Revolutionary War, a time of tension and great changes occurring in America. Unlike most musicals, for this one specifically, the cast strictly sings the story of Hamilton’s life. Surprisingly enough, the songs are rapped by the cast (with the exception of certain songs) creating a more exciting experience to the historical background of the show. Like most movies and shows depicting historical figures and events, Hamilton is not entirely accurate. However it is for the most part historically accurate.
Even if you don’t typically define yourself as a musical connoisseur, this show is sure to impress you. It will get you laughing and maybe even pull at your heart strings. Hamilton offers multiple aspects for all types of audiences and is definitely one that you shouldn’t miss.
The Benedum itself deserves recognition as its interior is without a doubt elegant and provides the perfect mood for a nice evening out. No seat occupied by the audience can be described negatively; even being seated in the balcony, the view wasn’t obscured. If you would like to amplify your viewing experience, it’s highly recommended that you try something sweet and pair your show with a Shirley Temple (as pictured above)!
The students had a great time getting to bond over their common interest and love for musicals! Don’t miss the next time that this chance is offered- you might just find that you had enjoyed something you never thought you would!
