Imagine that someone came up to you and asked you if you could name fifteen tribes of native peoples currently living in the United States.  What would you do? 

Would you be able to do it?  Go ahead, try…  how many did you come up with?  If you subtract the names that are used by sports teams, school mascots, or car companies, how many do you have left?

In her keynote address to the 14th Annual Leadership and Ethics Conference last Thursday, the writer and activist Winona LaDuke asked everyone in the audience to raise a hand if they could name fifteen tribes.  What percentage of the audience do you think raised their hands?  What do you think this says about the way America understands itself and it’s history?
