Ellen “Ellie” Newman was born in 1860 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, to Amelia Loeb Newman (click here to view her biography) and Nathan Newman (click here to view his biography). She had six siblings: Ferdinand Newman of Braddock, Pennsylvania, Ida Newman Grauer, Hannah Newman, and Nettie Newman of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, Josephine Newman Loeb of Baltimore, Maryland, and Joseph Newman (click here to view his biography) of Milton, Pennsylvania.

According to the 1860 census, Ellen lived with her parents, siblings, and maternal grandfather, Isaac Loeb (click here to view his biography), in Mill Hall in Clinton County. Her grandfather and father both worked as butchers. In the 1870 census, she lived with her parents, siblings, maternal grandfather, and Anthony Shay, who had an unknown relationship to the family, in Lock Haven. According to her brother, Joseph’s, obituary in the Democratic Watchman, the family moved from Lock Haven to Bellefonte sometime in the 1870s. Ellen’s father, however, more than likely did not move with the family since he died in 1870.

According to Ellen’s obituary, Simon Loeb of Bellefonte, her uncle, had “…taken to raise…” her in Bellefonte. Neither her biological parents nor her siblings are mentioned in her obituary. While Ellen died in 1874, in the 1880 census, her mother, Amelia, and her siblings lived with Simon Loeb, Amelia’s brother, and his wife, Lenora Loeb, in Bellefonte.

According to her obituary in the Democratic Watchman, Ellen died at the age of 14 years, two months, and four days on June 22, 1874, of heart disease. She had been feeling unwell in the morning, but went to Mr. Fabel’s to play, where she got progressively worse and died.

She was buried in the Rodef Shalom Cemetery in Bellefonte. She was remembered as being “…a dear, winsome little creature, the pet and pride of the household, and her loss will be deeply and grievously felt.”
