How Trump “Drained the Swamp”

Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign saw record support in terms of individual donations, leading to his divisive and unexpected electoral win. Though the campaign’s success was extremely complex, a key appeal Trump and his team used was to the American roots of “anti-tyranny.” You probably have heard the slogan “Drain the Swamp,” but what does it mean?

The United States was founded upon individuality and separation from big government powers. He pushed that his opponents were career politicians, draining the American taxpayer dollar. He insisted that Americans were having their dollar stolen, inspiring the idea that like the colonists, Americans had no real representation in the government. Thus led to his slogan “Drain the Swamp.”

In order to separate himself from the swamp, Trump successfully utilized his position as the underdog: A businessman with no previous political power seeking reform in our government. Donald Trump being a businessman and outsider appealed to the American “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” sentiment and garnered massive support from blue collar workers. He then continued to use this sentiment on the aforementioned “anti-tyranny” idea, creating a massively loyal voter base. This appeal did not come without its cons however, and many independent voters felt isolated by his radical attitude toward longtime government employees.

Though his plan to push against these career politicians help him edge out Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, the same strategy failed to garner enough support come 2020. Trump’s voter base remains loyal, however, and many await Trump’s announcement for the 2024 election year. Recent primaries have proven this, with longtime Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney losing her seat as Republican head. Liz Cheney was skeptical of Trump which is likely the cause of her loss as opposed to her adversary, who Trump endorsed. Many of Trump’s endorsed candidates are winning across the map, proving the shift Trump made in the Republican party. Trump continues to use this “anti-tyranny” sentiment in his rhetoric, visible through his media site Truth Social.

Though his 2024 campaign has not been announced, Trump’s name and campaign strategies make rounds across American politics, even continuing to make conversations around the world. Many await and many abhor the idea of his 2024 campaign, but most admit his ingenious strategy in appealing to these American sentiments played a huge role in his 2016 win and intensely loyal voter base.

  1. Hmm, I agree with you. Trump did “drain the swamp” and did eventually build a loyal voter base through this tactic. I like how you analyzed Trump’s ulterior motives from 2016 and even in the future. (It’s almost like you are representing Trump as a plotter, working behind the scenes.) Maybe you could create a timeline across your blog posts and focus on each event that led up to Trump’s “Drain the Swamp” slogan; this way you could delve into more depth on how he reached this desire. Overall, great blog post!

    1. I like how your commonplace blog was similar to the commonplace reading in the sense that you used Trump’s campaign and his slogan just like the reading used Obama’s as an example. Something I am not a fan of, though, is that the entire blog was about politics (but that’s just me because I try to stay as far away from politics as possible). A question I have is now that you will be old enough to vote in the upcoming presidential election, do you plan on voting and how do you plan on persuading others to vote? Overall this blog was very well-written and I can tell you have a deep understanding of the subject.
