Informal DePICtion

A compelling scene was when Addario was describing when she dressed as a Muslim to get deeper into the culture to photograph it. When she goes into detail about how people treated her in Pakistan when she wrote, “…Pakistanis knew I was a foreign woman simply because I was carrying a camera, working, trespassing in a man’s world…to them, that was enough to merit a quick feel on any part of my body” (Addario 73). In this excerpt, Addario uses informal diction to help bring a closer relationship between the reader and her. This is important for drawing in her audience because she gives an honest recollection of the events that occurred. This honesty grabs the audience’s attention because of the commonplace of informal language. This shared language makes readers feel on the same intellectual level as Addario, since she does not speak superior than them. This strategy is useful for making the reader’s feel comfortable and able to understand the author’s true message through their honesty.

This excerpt also exhibits Addario strategy of using imagery. When she includes the descriptive scene where the men touched her inappropriately, brings a sense of uncomfortable violation. This imagery showcases the true nature of the men in Pakistan society. The descriptive narrative that she provides gives the audience the ability to “relive” her situation.

This strategy is easily adoptable when writing my own passion blog pieces. I can use informal diction throughout my passion blog whenever I want my audience to not feel intimidated by the copious information. My passion of weight training/working out makes it easy to speak informally when listing routines and advice. I want to create the same close relationship with my audience because I want to be able to give advice that they will want to follow. Also, I could utilize imagery in my passion blog by describing the proper techniques and forms of weightlifting to give the audience a visual aid in order to be successful. By describing the perfect stance I can give readers a clear idea of how to perform these tasks correctly. By adopting these techniques I can use my close relationship with the audience to better serve them with my consultation.
