The Intern

Hello everyone!

In honor of this being the second to last passion blog, I would like to end on a light and happy note. Most of the previous movies I have discussed are intense stories, so this last movie I will be talking about is much lighter. Still, it doesn’t take away from its amazingness, and it is also one of my favorite movies.

The Intern (2015) is a comedy film about a 70-year old retired man, Ben Whittaker, who decides to apply for a position as an intern at an online fashion website. Ben, who is a widower, had too much time on his hands and decides that the job will present him with a new challenge in life. Of course, this position is not common, as internships are generally for young adults. On his journey at the company, he develops long-lasting friendships with everyone at the company, including founder Jules Ostin. Jules’ company is very fast-growing, and one of her co-workers believes it might be getting out of her hands. It is then suggested that Jules hires a CEO that could help her lead the company, but she is reluctant about this option since she doesn’t want to have a boss. However, it is evident that Jules is in need of someone’s help, as too much work begins to take a toll on her private life. Watch the trailer here.

The movie is centered around the relationship he forms with Jules, as she is a very busy woman and feels as though she has no time for anything. Both of them have a lot to offer to each other: on one hand, Ben shares his wisdom and teaches Jules a lot about life. On the other, Jules adds a breath of fresh air into Ben’s life and shows him how society has changed in terms of social roles. Both are inspiring to each other, and they form an incredible bond that changes their lives.

I believe one of the things I love the most about this movie is how Jules Ostin is depicted. She is a successful woman who is an entrepreneur and the leader of her own life. She is a very inspiring character, as she is portrayed as very hard-working but also real. She is not depicted as your average perfect woman who does everything right. Instead, the movie also shows her stresses and failures, and how she is able to recognize them and utilize them to move forward. I love the relationship she forms with Ben, because it inspires me to have a different perspective on life and relationships. As said in a movie review by Variety Magazine, “behind at least one strong woman stands an older, wiser man” (Lodge). As said by a movie review by The New York Times, “she is the boss, but he is the star” (Dargis).

Additional to the heartwarming and inspiring story, I am confident when I say it is of high quality due to the performances of Academy Award-Winning actors Robert De Niro (Ben) and Anne Hathaway (Jules). As a movie enthusiast, I believe that the single most important thing about a good movie is the acting. The plot of the movie may not be filled with action and twists, but as long as the performances are good, the movie will be worth your time.

Definitely give it a watch if you are looking for something fun and light to watch!

  1. This movie sounds really good! To me it seems like so many of us can get swept up in all of the popular action or superhero or horror movies that have come out recently; I’m a hardcore scifi and fantasy fan, and I know I can sometimes forget to try movies like this. I love Anne Hathaway, and I also love that she’s playing a strong female lead – and a realistic one at that. So many movies dehumanize women so I appreciate the humanization in this one. Thanks for the recommendation!
