This week I’m going to be throwing it back and will be analyzing T-Pain’s classic “Apple Bottom Jeans (Low)”. Now, you’re probably reading this and thinking “wow that’s such a beautiful piece of art” (because it clearly is) so I figured, why not give this magnificent song its due justice and dig it apart.
Now of course like any great early 2000s rap song, Apple Bottom Jeans starts with a great “Mmm” humming sound with some great “let me talk to ’em” lyrics playing in the background. This lead up accelerates the song into the classy line “Shawty got low” symbolizing an attractive girl’s movements to the ground. He then goes on to describe on on-looker with “baggy sweat pants” and “Reebox with the straps” which represents a cool, hip, male figure who the attractive girl turns to and “Gives that big booty a slap”.
Then, T-Pain enlightens the audience with the lines “I ain’t seen nothin’ that’ll make me go that crazy” referring to the attractive girl and how amazing he finds her. He then goes on to add that she makes him spend a lot of “dough” which in this case does not mean the stuff you bake with, but rather money. In these lines it is seen that T-Pain finds this girl to be so attractive that he is willing to spend large amounts of money just to see her.
He later goes on to sing that if the attractive girls “work[s] the pole” that he will reward her with his “bank roll”. These lines exemplify the special talent that the girl has and how impressive T-Pain finds this talent to be. Once again, he references how much money he has and how he is willing to spend it all on this girl because she is so attractive and talented. He actually later ends this stanza with the lines “cash ain’t a problem [I] got a pocket full a that!”. T-Pain is a rich man, so it seems.
After this, the chorus comes back around again which shows that this girl is still impressing T-Pain and as usual, he is ready to throw all of his money at her.
He later goes on to sing “what you think I’m playing baby girl” which is meant to show the girl that he means business. This line is preceded by several lines describing the large amounts of money that T-Pain possesses and how he is willing to give it to her.
In the verses to come, T-Pain describes the woman as having “took his cash”, but then later says that he doesn’t want it back. I imagine he doesn’t want it back because the woman is such a good dancer and he wants to reward her. He describes her dancing through the lines “she wouldn’t stop, made it drop, shawty did that pop and lock” which is a hip way of saying she busted some pretty sweet moves.
The song then ends by re-emphasizing how the woman gets “low”, hence the second name for the song.
Overall, a true classy piece of art. Great job, T-Pain.
