Inside The Mind of A Master Procrastinator

I found this video when I was procrastinating.  I thought “Well maybe if I figure out why I procrastinate, I’ll stop”.  So obviously, I had to watch the video.  Ironically enough I watched this on the night that I was supposed to be recording my RCL speech.  If you ever want to take notes or get better at public speaking, Tim Urban’s presentation style is brilliant.  He uses his hands effectively, and he has purposeful movements across the stage.  He has a perfect blend of seriousness and humor to keep the audience engaged and captivated for the entirety of the talk, and I highly recommend watching it.  The message is slightly dark but there’s a very positive and uplifting end to the talk, and Urban leaves the audience on a high note.  His storytelling technique is masterful and his ability to fluctuate tempo and change tones is spectacular.  I also like the simplicity of the talk.  He uses common terms to describe an advanced idea in a simplistic way that everyone in the audience can understand and relate to.  Again, I highly recommend watching the video.  Once you start it, it will be hard to stop without finishing.

An early thought that I have for my next project is centered around movies and the film industry.  Diverse casts have exponentially increased over the past few years, and it could potentially be interesting to examine the increase in diversity in films both racially and gender-wise.  I could then expand into a broader topic of genders and ethnicities becoming more involved not only in movies, but in politics and any other sector of the world that in the past was mostly dominated by white men.  This is by no means a final decision or even the number one choice at the moment, but this was my original thought when I first read the rubric.

  1. I really enjoyed watching this TED Talk. Especially as a college student, we witness procrastination the most. I couldn’t agree more about how you described his presentation. He engaged his audience perfectly and his speech flowed really well. About your paradigm shift idea, I think the change in the movie or film industry is interesting. I would be careful tying in genders as you don’t want to go off topic.

  2. I got physically very stressed for the speaker while he was talking about procrastinating his thesis at the beginning of the video. He was a fantastic speaker and even though i previously would not have considered myself a procrastinator, his points made me realize that i am a procrastinator with things that Don’t have concrete deadlines. I really enjoyed this TED talk and i really liked the way he spoke.

  3. I like the Ted talk you shared. It’s talking about procrastinating in a fun way. I’m a procrastinator so I can relate to the pain. I think it makes more sense why I’m doing that after I watched this ted talk. Also, talking about the film industry in your next project is a good idea. the topic of genders and ethnicities in history is also worthful to talk about.
