USA vs. COVID-19

The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is around 95% effective in clinical trials, the Moderna vaccine is around 90% effective, and the world may have hope to see the end of Coronavirus sometime soon?  These vaccines are vastly more effective than most scientists had hoped, and having a vaccine within nearly a year of a pandemic virus is a historic feat.  The use of mRNA vaccines have made the process shorter and more effective.  It seems as though masks and social distancing haven’t worked, especially in America.  Many scientists and experts are stating: “It makes it now clear that vaccines will be our way out of this pandemic,” says Kanta Subbarao, a virologist at the Doherty Institute, who has studied emerging viruses.

I think that we also could’ve avoided this pandemic and its consequences if everyone behaved for 2-3 weeks.  In early March, if everyone actually socially distanced and wore masks and tried to stay inside their home for just 14 days, I think we’d be looking at a very different situation than we are right now.  Unfortunately, however, America is the land of the free and the home of the brave and we do whatever we want and our rights will never be infringed upon.  This is why 250,000 Americans and counting have died from COVID-19.  It’s embarassing to see the rest of the world not suffer as much as we are, and then have our own people try to defend our response to the pandemic.

I want to be excited for a vaccine but I’ve learned this year never to expect anything good.  I’m eager to see how fast the vaccine is rolled out to us civilians as opposed to simply doctors and essential workers.  I also am curious to see how much the shift in Presidents has an affect on COVID-19.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the transition of power early next year has a drastic impact on the country’s strategy regarding the virus.

What do you think the way out of this pandemic is for America?  Do you think that continuing to wear masks or going back into a lockdown or social distancing plays a factor and to what extent does it play a factor in controlling case numbers and deaths?  What do you think of the response as a whole from America?  Finally, what do you think is a realistic timetable as to when we could see things go back to how they were before the virus hit the USA?

  1. People keep trying to find someone to blame for the COVID-19 outbreak. They don’t realize they are a major piece in the spread of the virus. No matter what the government advised, COVID would still spread if people acted foolishly. Hopefully, this vaccine go wells and we can start 2021 without a worldwide disease.

  2. I think we can all agree that the competition that we have been in against COVID has not been the type of competition that we love seeing but i can agree with you that the vaccines offer a glimmer of hope. I’m Definitely curious to see how things are rolled into action with the vaccine, i Wouldn’t be surprised if it things were relatively fast (at least in regards to wide scale distribution), but i also know that it will likely be a very long time before people in our age cohort actually get to be vaccinated. I have no idea what the time Table will be, especially with the sheer number of people that need to Take the vaccine and all the issues that im sure Will arise. My hope is that people Will be smart and committed to taking it and being safe, but given our past dealings with the virus, i Don’t foresee americans handling this too well.
