Meal Review
My first meal review comes from a college-town favorite — Insomnia cookies. I would like to start my Insomnia Cookies review by sharing a story from my first venture there in State College. It was late at night, and I kindly asked the lady behind the counter for 6 specific cookies. She came back with 6 cookies of her own choosing, saying she forgot what I had wanted. I am not one to complain, and the cookies were great, but it was just a strange experience. Nonetheless, my second trip to Insomnia was great. It was a cold, rainy night so of course I decided to try their ice cream paired with a deluxe Funfetti cookie. The ice cream was very solid, nothing really much to say there. It tasted exactly how you would expect vanilla ice cream to taste. The cookie, however, was a bit too crunchy for my liking. Insomnia is known for their soft, warm cookies that melt in your mouth, but I found this cookie to not meet this standard as it was too hard.
My second review comes from Pollock dining commons. After their impressive showing last week, I have started to come here a lot more often. On this occasion, I opted for the cheeseburger, curly fries, pasta with Alfredo sauce, and “Open Face Pot Roast Sandwich w/ Beer Cheese Sauce “. I have reviewed the cheeseburger before, so I will pass on that. The curly fries are much better than the regular French fry option typically offered. They have much more flavor and are usually softer with a better texture. The pot roast sandwich was much better than I had anticipated. It seemed to lack flavor, but it was very much palatable. The pasta with Alfredo sauce was very good, although I would just make the request that there be less sauce on the pasta. It was very overwhelming at times, which can be off-putting to many.
My final meal of the week came from Burger King. This was my first time coming to Burger King at Penn State, and I chose to get the Bacon King burger, which comes with 2 burger patties, bacon, cheese, mayo, and ketchup. The burger was truly massive and was probably one of the largest burgers I’ve ever eaten. This burger was up to my standards. It certainly was not up to the likes of shake shack and five guys, but for Burger King, I was surprised. I did not think they were capable of producing a solid item.
Quality Complaints
My first quality complaint comes from Pollock dining commons. They left a sticker on the sliced cucumber. I want to bring awareness to this issue and hopefully some change is made.
Another quality complaint I have comes from the In a Pickle in Redifer. The bottom of the bread is very weak, and when the bread is opened up, the bottom often cracks and breaks open. This leaves a mess in the wrapper and makes the sandwich difficult to eat.
I’ve never actually tried Insomnia Cookies before, but they sound good! It was interesting to see how people at other dinning halls eat; I live on the West side and I eat there on occasion. There is also a deli next to the dinning hall and I go there on occasion.
My last experience with Insomnia Cookies was amazing. It was at the end of a volunteering event, and they gave us the cookies for free. I couldn’t tell you how good the cookies were, just that they were free and I hadn’t eaten in a few hours.
