Sunstein’s Crossover Idea

After reading Sunstein’s article regarding his ideas 0n linking websites of different political standings together, it incited curiosity in me on how our social media presence would change if this were the case. Nowadays, everyone can go on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. and be surrounded by ideas and views that are similar to them. For example, Snapchat has a feature on their stories section, where if there is an article or individual that pops up in their feed, they can choose to “hide” them. This just makes it so that the article and/or individual will not show up again, along with similar sites and people.

The idea that Sunstein proposes of linking together sites that are both liberal and conservative, is actually very intriguing and should be practiced to see if it affects the knowledge and views of our social communities. If someone were to go their democratic leaning news source and were shown the republican side of the same situation or vice versa, then they would be able to see and experience a different view point. I believe this would actually be good, because people won’t be so sheltered in their own political standing and can see reasonable alternative view points.

The filter bubble would burst if this idea is put into action. The bubble is what people are stuck in and their feeds are filtering out different views and ideas from them seeing it. With new news sources coming into the conscious of different people, will allow for the overall community to be more knowledgeable and well informed on the different view points of a situation. This is how things go viral as well.

When a video or picture goes viral, it is bursting the filter bubble and showing up on multiple different peoples feeds, which then is shared hundreds and thousands of times. It enters different areas of interest and is not just confined within that interest group, but rather shared throughout the social media community and goes viral.

Whether this idea works or not, it would be interesting to watch nonetheless. When people are exposed to new ideas and let it challenge their current ideas, it allows for them to really be knowledgeable on politics and have a set viewpoint because they have taken into account everyones beliefs.
