The 8th Natural Wonder in the World

Lebanon is the site of some of the most beautiful cities in the world. Not only are there beautiful cities though, but also there is one of the seven natural wonders of the world in Lebanon. Just kidding, that is a lie. BUT, it was almost one of the sevent, so now everyone calls it the 8th natural wonder in the world. Right as it was about to make the cut to be one of the 7 wonders, they baffled us and ended up naming somewhere else as one of the seven natural wonders. That’s okay though because we Lebanese people know how beautiful our country actually is.

Let me tell you about the wonder though. We call it mgharit Jeita in Arabic. That just means “the cave of Jeita” It is pronounced a little differently than how it is spelt, but any Lebanese will understand if you said only that. I believe everywhere else in the world refer to it as the Jeita Grotto. Jeita is the city and “grotto” simple means cave. That’s exactly what it is! It sounds super lame and boring, but it is absolutely spectacular actually.

The cave is a compound of crystalized caves. It is made up of two limestone caves and has a 6230-meter long river that runs throughout it all year long. Apparently, the action of water in the limestone has created “cathedral – like” vaults full of various sizes, colors, and shapes. You are able to see majestic curtains and just amazing rock formations. It is breath taking. The total length of the cave is more than 9000 meter and there is among one of the largest stalactites (the icicle looking rocks hanging from the ceiling) in the world hanging. From ceiling to water level there is a distance of 108 meters. This cave is literally insane.

When you go on the tour in the cave, they do not allow any devices or purses or anything inside. You have to store them all in a locker before you enter the cave. To keep the water as blue and as perfect as it is, they have everyone ride in canoes that one must manually paddle. The water is completely natural with no preservations or chemicals or anything. Also, on the inside, in a part of the cave, because it is so insanely tall they have a bridge. It looks like it could collapse at any time possible, but it really won’t. It just looks so cool because its wooden and long and just wow. The cave is beautiful. I will link a video as well as some pictures here. If i were you, i would watch the video because there is nothing more beautiful.

You get this weird feeling when you are in the cave. Seeing it in person is so different than seeing it on a computer screen. You take in all the natural, gorgeous creations this world has to offer. It is actually quite empowering because realizing that man did not make this, and that there is some greater force out there, whatever it may be that created this spectacular site, gives you the feeling of awe. You will be in awe. It is breathtaking.

Notice how the river water is amazingly blue. They add no perservatives or coloring or anything to it. It is all natural.

  1. That is so cool! Except I get claustrophobic so quickly so I would have been terrified. But, it looks absolutely beautiful and it sounds like you really enjoyed it.
