Happy Saturday class! Before I begin, I just want to remind you guys how amazing you are. Never be afraid to take time to focus on yourself and your mental health. I know sometimes I need a little reminding 🙂 Alright this week I’m going to be discussing an amazing movie. It is definitely a little on the romantic side, but that’s A-okay if you’re a hopeless romantic like myself. Personally, Pride and Prejudice (the version from 2005) is in the top 10 movies I’ve ever watched. In fact, I watched it four times in the span of two days because the acting was amazing, the historical aspect was perfect, and I completely fell in love with this movie. To be honest, I was a little hesitant to watch this movie. At the time, I wasn’t really into “period dramas” or historical movies. Looking back now as a history major, I definitely should have hopped on that genre years ago because honestly it’s my favorite now and some of the best movies I have seen have been historical dramas. Some other historical dramas that I’d like to briefly name and recommend include Bridgerton, Reign, the Crown, and Outlander. I know at some point I’ll mention Outlander in another passion blog post just because that show broke me and put me back together in every way possible. It definitely includes issues that are sometimes hard to talk about in society, but if you ever get the chance, I recommend that show as well. However, let’s get back to Pride and Prejudice.
Synopsis: Based on Jane Austen’s novel by the same name, Pride and Prejudice centers upon the lives of an English family as they navigate the “coming of age” transition. In this time period, women would get married young, especially if they had a lot of younger siblings since it would relieve their parents from financial burden. The film starts off with the oldest Bennet daughter, Jane, looking for a husband at the local ball. There, Mr. Bingley, a young and wealthy bachelor, is captivated by Jane. But the story really follows Jane’s younger sister, the next oldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth, as she catches the attention of  Mr. Bingley’s mysterious and brooding friend, Mr. Darcy. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just leave it at that. Absolutely amazing movie, and I can assure you that if you’re big into romantic movies like me, then you will definitely be bawling your eyes out by the last scene.
Review: Â I feel like my review has already been laced into the previous paragraphs, but I will explain what specifically about the movie I truly loved. In particular, I’m a big Keira Knightley fan. She plays Elizabeth Bennet in the movie, and truthfully I have seen the older version of Pride and Prejudice, but I just wasn’t a big fan of who they cast alongside Colin Firth in the 1995 version. I think that her and Matthew Macfadyen have intense chemistry, and it’s evident in the film. I loved the cinematography too, and I definitely cried at the end when they FINALLY professed their love for one another.
I love this movie!! I watched it and immediately delved into the wonderful genre that is Historical Fiction. Not sure if you have gotten the chance to see Bridgerton on Netflix, but the show takes place in a similar time period.
