Happy Tuesday Classmates and Bonnie! As always, I hope you guys are doing well! Maybe it’ll bring you comfort that we only have two weeks left of classes, since I know many of us are truly feeling burnt-out. I know personally I’m very excited for the summer. Especially because last summer my family was very strict with quarantining, so with everyone getting vaccinated, I will be able to see more friends before I head off to State College in the fall. Fortunately, I was awarded with a research assistant position at Penn State this summer and for the fall, so I have something to look forward to and something that will help me pass all the free time once the semester ends. Do you guys have any plans for the summer?

Now, onto our usual scheduled post on my Netflix recommendations. This week I will discuss a show that I went through fairly quickly: Virgin River. I was recommended this show my mom’s friend, and while I usually stray from too soap-y type shows, I am a hopeless romantic so I decided to give Virgin River a chance, and I definitely was not disappointed.

Summary: The show begins with a nurse, Mel, moving into a small town called Virgin River. The circumstances as to why she decided to leave her life behind in LA are at first a mystery to the viewer. As she becomes acclimated to the towns people, Mel develops a friendship with the local bar owner, Jack. At the time, Jack is in a relationship with Charmane, making his newly developed feelings for Mel complicated. Virgin River centers upon the complications between the romantic feelings that Jack and Mel feel for each other and the ensuing problems that occur as a result. As the show goes from the first to the second season, we also learn about Mel’s background and why she started a new life in Virgin River.

Review: (SPOILERS INCLUDED)Overall, this show gave me “feel-good vibes.” I went through it quickly because the drama from Jack and Mel’s relationship left me begging for more after each episode. In particular, I found the storyline was nicely paced, and I don’t recall any instances where it became dry or the show felt dragged on. The characters were also well-developed. I am a big fan of Mel and Jack, but finding out that Charmane was pregnant was a huge shocker. This definitely added drama to the show, but I just wanted to see Jack and Mel have a happy ending. Because there were only two seasons so far, I predict that season three will see Jack become a dad and how that will affect his relationship with Mel, as she is not the mother of his kids. Besides having these two end up together, realistically I don’t see what the show writers can do to expand on the current story line. Perhaps they will touch on the relationship between Preacher and Paige? Either way, I was very satisfied with the show. 10 episodes per season was perfect for a weekend binge-watching session.

  1. So if you had to choose ONE recommendation for me based on what you reviewed this semester, which would you choose?? NO PRESSURE!!! 🙂

Nice work with your descriptive writing – it’s a challenge to summarize a whole series/season vividly – without spoilers! – in a way that intrigues the audience. There are actually people who get paid to write episode summarize and series descriptions for Netflix, you know – that COULD be you!! Along with being a history professor and county executive and so forth…
