About

Sage Wright graduated from Brigham Young University in 2017 with a B.S. in Bioinformatics and minors in Computer Science, English, and Music. At BYU, she was an active member in the bioinformatic research lab of Dr. John S.K. Kauwe studying Alzheimer’s Disease.

She is recent graduate of the Master of Science program at Penn State University in Bioinformatics & Genomics.

During her time at Penn State, she worked in a number of laboratories on a variety of projects. She started in the Yue Lab in 2017 where her project goal was to develop new computational tools that would identify cancer-specific structural variations and gene fusions from alternative sequencing technologies.

Although the Yue Lab moved to Northwestern in the summer of 2019, she remained at Penn State with the Broach Lab working with Dr. Yue on the same project goals.

She began to work on her Master’s thesis in 2020 with Dr. Sinisa Dovat where she focused on understanding the relationship of the tumor suppressor Ikaros to a variety of heterochromatin markers after AML cells were dosed with a drug currently in clinical trials. Her thesis, “The effect of CK2 inhibition on heterochromatin in AML,” is available upon request while it is undergoing institutional processing for public availability.

At Penn State, she was supported by the Biomedical Big Data To Knowledge (B2D2K) NIH Training Grant. She was a student coordinator of the training grant, and organized monthly training meetings for students where they discussed ethics, important bioinformatic practices, and their latest research.

She was also the Treasurer for the Science Policy Society, where they hosted monthly “Science on Tap” meetings. These meetings brought science experts from the university to talk to members of the public about their research and how it related to current events.

Her research interests include the genetics of human disease, personalized medicine, and structural variants. She enjoys reading, hiking, and playing the violin in her spare time. Sage performs with the West Shore Symphony Orchestra in the 1st violin section.
