My name is Mohammed Saleem, I am a third year law student at Penn State Dickinson Law and Masters in Pharmaceutical Chemistry student at the University of Florida Distance Education program, and recently passed the patent bar. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Physiology from the University of Arizona. As you probably figured out by now, I really like science, specifically human biology (and more specifically drug design, molecular targets, and biochemical cascades).
I came into law school fresh off the pre-med track. I did not quite understand what being a lawyer meant, or what I could even do with a law degree other than work at a private law firm. I had a loose understanding of what patent law was, but it was not until my second year that I took a class on pharmaceutical and biotech patents. That class is what changed everything for me. It was the perfect cross between the sciences and the law, and not only allowed me to use my previous knowledge, but required it. It was then when I decided to take on a concurrent degree in pharmaceutical chemistry, so that I can continue to enhance my knowledge of the sciences while creating marketability for myself.
Through my class on patents, researching the discipline on my own, and recently passing the patent bar. I have acquired a reasonable degree of understanding complex regulations in creating and marketing a new, or even a generic drug. With this blog, I aim to inform entrepreneurs interested in the pharmaceutical industry and simplifying some of the complexities of federal regulations, and what marketability and rights a company may have from merely filing a patent application (as opposed to having an approved and active patent).
