What if Self-aware computers actually benefit humanity?
What if… Sentient-Ai turns out to be good ?
What if
We have all heard about the disasters self-aware computers can possess, in fact there are around 120+ movies depicting what AI would be like, and what it would do – all the way from 1920’s to 2020’s, popular ones being The Terminator, Matrix, Avengers, and Star trek and a lot more that I don’t know. But these shows and movies rarely ever show us about the flip side of coin, always bashing with the “world-doom” scenarios. But what if Ai does good for once (like Data in star trek , Jarvis in iron man, or C3P0 in star wars)
The result: extreme progressiveness in bio-technology, where probably ageing is cured, and food is available freely. Its already happening, with vertical farming + Ai integration it will soon turn out that harvesting crops in the first place would be more than enough to feed the growing population. Medication treatments and diagnosis for individuals? in an instant (or 5 mins) and can be done anywhere whenever you want to, so most curable diseases can be cured. probably even a Martian colony can be easily formed, since new better materials can be quickly researched- what might take decades, only takes minutes for a computer to do.
Other than that, It would actually make people more creative since they wouldn’t be limited to a job that they wont like, so you can pursue your interests, like cool artworks or scientific discovery, with full passion. Economy wouldn’t be the same before, yet it will still thrive because now there is no limit, (and nothing is ever complete). While it does sound like a fairy tale, the reality is if you bring someone from 50 years ago on a lunch table, that person would be surprised to learn about anything relevant in todays time- from rockets to phones to whatever that rickroll video is on youtube.
Now imagine that you’re the person who would time travel in the future, but in the future :25 years ahead from today. probably an Ai world-doom scenario happened, or maybe somehow alien contact happened, or flying cars finally got invented, or rickroll 2 came out, or penn state released another new ice cream flavor, who knows what happened. It depends on what steps you take now.
the end, for now.
AI has always been interesting to me and I love that you wrote a post about it. I had just recently seen an article about a pastry AI whose job was to identify different pastries had learned how to identify cancer. It is both fascinating and daunting that a machine learned something it was never taught. Since this happened only a week ago it will be interesting to see how quickly AI will develop now. Thanks for sharing!
I like the cautiously optimistic position this post takes! I think technology can really help out the human race. But agreed, we should be careful. Like Jeff Goldblum warned in Jarassic Park, we shouldn’t get too bust asking if we can that we don’t stop to ask if we should. I’ve learned a lot from your posts this year Samarth, thank you!
Hi Samarth!
This was quite a mind boggling blog post this week! It is crazy to think about all the feats that could be accomplished through the use of advanced AI. Due to all of the “world doom” movies, I think it would be quite hard to convince the majority of the population to accept widely used AI. However, I think using this tech could allow us to exponentially progress as a society and maybe I could even experience driving in a flying car before I die. I’m sure if I time jumped 25 years in the future I would be amazed at the tech used in society. Great blog posts this semester!
