Hi! I’m a Ph.D. candidate in the Dept. of Astronomy & Astrophysics at Penn State.
I am interested in understanding the medium around galaxies, called the circumgalactic medium (CGM). To study the CGM, we analyze the spectra of background quasars which serve as probes of the CGM. The absorption caused by gas in the CGM is imprinted on the spectra in the form of absorption lines. By studying these absorption lines, we infer various properties of the CGM such as temperatures, gas densities, and metallicities. I have developed a novel method (see Sameer et al. 2021) that employs ionization modeling and Bayesian methods to extract these properties efficiently. This short video gives an overview of this work.
