For this week’s photographer of the week, I wanted to dive deeper and find a photographer who not only captures the image but uses a skill like pottery, painting, drawing, or any visual skill like that. In my research, I had discovered this wonderful photographer and artist, Liu Bolin, that creates illusions with paint to blend into any background!
About the Photographer and His Style:
Liu Bolin, famously known as “Invisible Man” is a performance artist and photographer known for camouflaging himself into environments. He uses acrylic paint to copy the scenery around him, making him like a chameleon, blending in with his surroundings, and making his photos stand out on their own with this unique style. He mainly uses a digital camera in color to portray the messages and artistry he wishes to showcase. Most of his work is done in a landscape as if he is just taking a picture of the environment, but when you begin to look closer, you noticed Liu Bolin camouflaged, becoming an artist statement and self-portrait. Being born and raised in China, most, if not all of his work is portrayed in China. He photographs not only for art, but to discuss social activism in a way it may not be seen. As he’s stated, “Disappearing is not the main point of my work. It’s just the method I use to pass on a message. It’s my way to convey all anxiety I feel for human beings.” He was selected to do works for global goals campaign to make images that conveyed goals such as using sustainable resources and ending poverty. Most of his photos are vibrant with color and are very busy with either object, wall art, or people, making his details in his camouflage blend into the scenery not only more believable but impressive. One of his most famous series,” Hiding in the city” has been displayed in numerous museums and institutions.

Overall Thoughts:
His style is distinctive because of his signature chameleon trick, which no one else can compare to. Put Liu Bolin into any environment, he will use his excellent art skills to paint on himself, to blend in perfectly for the photo. I enjoy looking at his work because not only are his pieces depictable, he uses his talents to his advantage. By combining his art and photography skills, we get a variety of cunning images that you are able to closely look into the detail and realize …. “OH! Liu Bolin is right there!” The amount of time and work it takes to capture one photo is extensive. This makes complete sense why his pieces are beloved and wanted all around the world!
