Faces

I actually haven’t done many new drawings lately, a few doodles here and there but that’s pretty much it. I did a drawing of Taylor Swift a little bit before I got to PSU which I posted above, but I haven’t finished the hair yet, haha so if you ever wondered what Taylor Swift looks like bald, here’s your chance to see! Like I said in one of my earlier posts, I’m trying to improve my ability to draw people, so this was one attempt. I looked off of a magazine for this drawing and tried to draw it exactly the way I saw it just to practice placement of facial features and simply drawing what I see. Drawing people and faces is a difficult task. Actually, drawing anything natural and making it look realistic is pretty difficult. Most things in nature don’t have straight lines, but rather shadows that appear to provide contrast. Take a leaf for instance. Sure a leaf has an outer edge, but it usually doesn’t have an dark outline showing the outer edge. We know it’s the outer edge because we can feel the edge and if we are just looking at it, the green, yellow, orange, or brown color stops at this point and there might be shadows showing where it crinkled or folds at the tips. Portraying realistic things on paper, especially in black and white, is difficult in this way. The artist needs to be aware of shadows and highlights to make the item seem realistic, but it’s also very muchabout drawing exactly what you see.

Details also matter a lot when drawing faces. If you put one little line (or shadow) under the eye slightly to the left, this could make the person look like they haven’t had enough sleep. If you put one pupil looking more upward than the other, the person will look like they have a lazy eye when they don’t have one. I find it remarkable how small variational details can make an entire portrait, or drawing of anything, look like different than the artist intended.

Actually, it doesn’t look like the site is letting me upload a picture today! I’ll show it to you in next week’s blog though!

It’s awesome that you draw. I wish I could draw, but I feel like it’s one of those things you can either do, or not do at all.
Well, I absolutely cannot draw for the life of me. My mom can. She’s amazing. Art itself is so intoxicating because literally everyone has a different perspective of it and that’s what makes it awesome.
My art weapon of choice is the piano and I think I’ll stick to that because if I decided to join the painting/drawing world, I would probably insult someone or something by my huge lack of talent.
Anyway, good luck with drawing and keep it up!! You never know who might see it.
