C3: The teacher uses data from his/her own classroom teaching to evaluate his/her own strengths and areas for improvement.

Video Analysis of Teaching

One of the main takeaways from my time at Penn State’s College of Education is that reflection is a key part of being a teacher. In order to make necessary changes and improve your practice, you must reflect on the things you’re doing in the classroom physically, behaviorally, and academically. To be able to effectively reflect on my teaching practice, I recorded a video of myself teaching a lesson twice throughout the semester. After recording the video, I watched it, recorded necessary data based on the area of teaching I was analyzing, (ex. “I had to redirect a student six times within a forty minute period”), and brainstormed solutions on how I could improve that aspect of my teaching. Collecting data is an essential part of reflection because you are able to see exactly where you need to improve or change a certain aspect of your teaching. Through the video analysis linked above, one can see that I was able to justify why I chose to focus on a certain area, connect it to a piece of literature, collect data on it, and brainstorm ideas on how to better my practice.
