Proof that Antibiotic Research Still Exists
Abstract
In microbiology lab, my fellow classmates and I are participating in a program called
Small Worlds Tiny Earth at Schuylkill, which is part of a larger global program to find new
antibiotics. The objective for our project is to take soil samples, grow microorganisms from those
samples, and test them for antibiotic-producing qualities. Our work is important because,
surprisingly and unfortunately, antibiotic research being done today is lacking. It is expensive
and we lack the resources and people willing to do it. If you think about how many students are
in a class and how many classes are participating in this program around the world, then we have
a lot of people researching for this problem and possibly discovering something we need and use
every day. I do believe my classmates and I can make a difference through our work. We have
exposed our microorganisms to other bacteria, gram stained them, and looked at them under the
microscope. Already my research has resulted in bacteria that may have antibiotic-producing
qualities and they are bacteria we do not recognize as common strains. I am excited to see what
becomes of my research at the end of the program.
