Exploring Antimicrobial’s
Abstract
I have been given the opportunity to be apart of a program called Tiny Earth. This program allows me to
be able learn more about bacteria while also being given a chance to discover a potentially new
antibiotic. This all started when we started digging up soil around campus and then transferred it to a
test tube. From there we have been doing a series of experiments trying to figure out what exactly our
bacteria is. These experiments include; diluting the soil sample, transferring it, and applying it to
different media. We also have been applying our bacteria samples to other bacteria such as
Staphylococcus epidermis and Escherichia coli, to see how they would react to each other. Finding a
new antibiotic would be life changing for some who are already resistant, while beneficial for those in
the future for new diseases. So far, my bacteria from my soil sample turns out to be gram positive,
catalase positive, and oxidase positive.
