Antimicrobial Resistance Testing

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance affects thousands of people each year. This occurs when the microbes

are not able to fight against that bacteria invading the body. In order to learn more about

antimicrobial resistance, we are working with Small World/Tiny Earth initiative. Our purpose, as

students, is to help participate in the development of new antibiotics from bacteria. Soil samples

were collected and grown using different tests for bacteria. In order to do this, multiple dilution

processes were performed, and students used pick-and-patch plating by choosing different

bacteria which gave students an opportunity to narrow down their choices to re-plate. We were

then able to choose which bacteria we wanted to re-plate in different environments. A sequence

of biochemical tests were performed, such as DNAse, MAC, MSA, Nitrate, etc., to try to identify

the bacteria. There were also differential media tests performed, such as Eosin Methlyene Blue, Salt

Agar, blood agar, and milk agar, to determine other characteristics that the bacteria could have. The results from the test are listed throughout the poster.

Mini Bio

My name is Ivory Keenan. I graduated from a small school called Williams Valley with only about 52 in my graduating class. While a lot of my peers knew what they wanted to do, I was undecided about my major in college until the middle of the senior year. I started taking CNA classes at the end of my senior year while still in school and became a certified nursing assistant. I love working with the residents and helping them. That was when I fully decided I wanted to become a nurse. I toured Joseph F. McCloskey School of Nursing and immediately fell in love. I thought it would be a good opportunity to further my education there considering it will have a ton of hands on clinical time with it being in the hospital.
