Antimicrobial Resistance Tiny Earth
Abstract
Antibiotics are critical tools for preventing and treating infections caused by specific bacteria in people, animals, and crops. These antibiotics are being used unnecessarily and misused which threats the usefulness of these important drugs. Antibiotics are one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today. The new antibiotics that pharmaceutical companies are trying to get to market may be effective against the most dangerous forms of the antibiotic resistant bacteria, but few new drugs are coming out. I believe we can make a difference in trying to conquer antibiotic resistance in other ways, including new antibiotic producing bacteria and their antimicrobial products. Our work started out by collecting soil from the campus grounds, and then I did a soil dilution to see what our bacteria would look like. We also did some experiments to figure out if we have any bacteria making antibiotics to help out. Then have worked to characterize the bacteria and help narrow down its potential identity through a series of biochemical and nutrient tests.

Hi, my name is Rachel Seresky. I am a nursing student. I got into this program because for to get my RN I have to learn about bacteria and how to figure them out in the nursing field.
