Abstract
Antibiotic resistance is a serious issue in today’s world. Throughout our work at Penn State Schuylkill and partnering with the Small World Initiative and Tiny Earth Program, we have done multiple different tests to find new antibiotics. We all collected soil samples from our school grounds and then diluted our samples. We further plated our dilutions onto agar plates and re-plated them a couple times as well. This helps us to narrow down different bacteria from the soil that could be antibiotic producers. As we narrowed down which bacteria would be successful, we did more and more tests, such as gram staining and biochemical tests. This allowed us to understand our bacteria better.

My name is Rachel Strohl and I am a 2019 Panther Valley graduate. I am a first-year student at Penn State Schuylkill and I am enrolled in the nursing class of 2021 at the Joseph F. McCloskey School of Nursing in Pottsville. I am honored that I could take part in the two programs, Tiny Earth and Small World, in order to help others learn about antibiotic resistance.
