Antimicrobial Resistance Tiny Earth
Abstract
The purpose of this project is to potentially find a bacterium that can produce an
antibiotic. Hopefully this antibiotic will be a new kind, but if we do not produce a new antibiotic,
we can at least take away the simple fact that we got to go through the steps that it takes to find
potential antibiotics. This process is important because bacteria now a days have developed a
high tolerance to antibiotics, thereby making them antibiotic resistant. To handle this problem,
we need more antibiotics to combat the problem. After sampling soil and performing a dilution
to see some bacteria easier, we tested our selected bacteria against known bacteria. Some test
that we have ran to characterize our selected samples include: an EMB, ENDO, MAC, MSA, and
DNAse agars and other biochemical tests. Most of my results came up negative but not all
showed negative results. The positive results were for the methyl red, starch hydrolysis test,
catalase, casease, and DNAse. I was very pleased with these results and even the negative ones
gave information about the bacteria. I believe this is a really promising project with plenty of
benefits for students.

The reason I am here is because once I graduate, I want to start a career in the nursing field. I have a great deal of interest in the nursing field, and overall the ability to help people. Nursing has always been my first choice of career path because the human body is such a fascinating thing when you take the time to really learn about it and what it can do. With being in microbiology it benefits me in so many ways because it is preparing me for the bacteria and viruses, I will come in contact with in the future.
