Antimicrobial Resistance: The Small World/Tiny Earth Initiative—The Answers Beneath Our Feet
Abstract
Small Worlds/Tiny Earths are two organizations we are working with through Penn State Schuylkill. Our purpose with this project is to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us when it comes to bacteria and microbes that could potentially help us in the future. Using the bacteria we harvested from soil samples, we are able to explore their antibiotic producing abilities. This project is important to us because we are able to participate in important research individually and view our own results. The results we obtain can help researches when it comes to developing new antibiotics to fight against the resistance problem we are experiencing worldwide. With growing our bacteria on different mediums we are able to understand what our personal bacteria can fight against and what substances they combat the most.

Mini Bio
I’m a first-year student at Penn State Schuylkill. I am going to be starting at the Joseph F. McCloskey School of Nursing in the fall of 2020. My goal in life is to become a Labor and Delivery nurse once I graduate college in May of 2022. When I’m not working on assignments for school, I’m a mom to a 2-year-old son back at home. I enjoy being outside and involving myself with nature as much as possible.
