Small World Initiative/Tiny Earth Program
Abstract
As a part of “Small World Initiative” / “Tiny Earth Program”, our goal is to research and
find new antibiotics from soil samples taken from our school grounds. Finding new antibiotics is
cool in itself, but there is an important purpose behind it as well. As a population, antibiotic
resistance is becoming more prominent and an underlying issue in the medical field. Our goal, as
researchers and students, is to help find a new antibiotic that bacteria are not resistant to yet. By
doing so, we are hoping to be a driving force in the movement to limit antibiotic resistance. So
far, we have sampled soil and done dilutions, pick and patch sampling against known bacterial
strains, gram positive / gram negative testing, and recently selective/differential media testing
and biochemical testing. My results include that my chosen bacteria are a gram-negative bacillus.
I am looking forward to seeing results from more tests and taking this project to the next level. In
the end, my goal is the same as everyone else, to find a new strain of antibiotics in order to help
the fight against antibiotic resistance.

Mini Bio
As a second year nursing student now at PSU Schuylkill, previously at FAU, I find interest in the medical field & have big plans for myself in it. This project gave me a new opportunity to pursue and learn and I am super excited to be a part of it!
