Description
Driving Questions:
- What are the models for how students learn science?
- What is the relationship between models of science learning and practices of teaching science?
Expectations:
Each participant will engage in building understanding of issues associated with learning and teaching science. This process involves being part of a learning community. As a community we will make sense of theory and research and develop theoretical as well as practical perspectives of science knowledge and learning. We will also examine exemplary teaching practices. Your understandings will be developed through readings, assignments and discussions in class. Participants will read and reflect on the assigned papers and actively participate in the in-class, small group, and web-based discussions, projects and related tasks. The first weeks of the course will focus on the psychological and sociological foundation of theory and research in science learning. The remainder of the class will examine current issues in science teaching and learning in light of your developing understanding of learning theory.
