11/16 – After Evergreen Marine experienced a mishap with one of their ships blocking transportation in and out of the Suez Canal in March 2021, they again experienced something similar in March 2022. Their ship, the Ever Forward, was stuck in the Chesapeake Bay after running ground. I understand things like this are hard to avoid, but I would not expect it to happen so soon and within the same company, after causing them to lose billions just a year before. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/15/business/ever-forward-stuck-chesapeake-bay.html#:~:text=The%20ship%20became%20stuck%20nearly,of%20global%20commercial%20maritime%20traffic.

Apple is having something big going on with their chip shortage issue. We all know that the iPhone is made globally from different areas of the world, their parts are made separately in different areas. For the first time, Apple is gonna focus on making their own components IN the US! This will be able to diversify their supply chain further, and their focus right now is their silicon production.

This article is about the Supply Chain and the upcoming holiday season. The article discusses the specific issues that are happening in the supply chain. Examples include electronic devices, bicycles, toys, and Christmas decorations. All of these items, listed are predicted to have supply chain issues ahead of time on multiple channels of transportation. The expected transportation to be impacted by the supply chain issues is sea freight. The article discusses the suppliers working with the network of people earlier in the year in order to make sure all the items are there in time for the holidays.
This article is talking about the issue of having too many containers. In 2020 at the start of the pandemic, there were issues of not having enough containers and now in 2022, the issue is having too many contianers. It is mentioned that this is causing a decline in global customer demand. Thus, causing a downward shift in consumption appetites. Container depots are declining future customers due to the sheer volume of the containers. The containers are not full either as noted in the article, so they are just taking up space where containers that are full and ready to go could be stored.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/electric-vehicles-scarce-parts-supply-chain-11668206037
This article is talking about the supply chain issues of electric cars. Electric cars have many parts for building the vehicles. An electric car typically has batteries, electric motors, and fancier electronics that make up the car. Electric cars have lower amounts of parts compared to regular gas cars but due to the newer technology of electric cars, there have to be reliable and consistent sources to buy the parts from. The supply chain of materials for electric vehicles is being affected heavily.
This article is discussing the supply chain issues with eggs in Bismarck North Dakota. Shelves with eggs all across North Dakota are empty. The biggest reason there are supply chain issues with eggs is that more than 50 million chickens and turkeys have been destroyed nationwide due to the influenza outbreak. The shortage has affected North Dakota even more because roughly 237,000 chickens and turkeys were affected in North Dakota.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/23/fords-supply-chain-problems-include-blue-oval-badges-for-f-series-pickups.html
I found this article interesting because we constantly hear about the chip shortage which is causing inventory of cars to be very low and causes prices of cars to sky-rocket. However, this article highlights the fact that small parts of a car can be critical. In Ford’s case, while vehicle badges are not critical to the vehicle it is what “brands’ the car. Therefore, this shortage of vehicle badges has impacted nearly 40,000 vehicles.

9/5: https://www.wsj.com/articles/pepsico-raises-full-year-expectations-while-navigating-supply-chain-environment-11633433216 PepsiCo has had to raise their prices on the consumer end to make up for the issues revolving around the supply chain. COVID-19 has posed an influx of issues for the supply chain of all companies. Key Comment(s): “Enterprises never built the necessary muscle memory to sense ensuing supply chain risks. We all have fire drills for emergencies, but there is no training or drill for supply chain risk crises. As a result, the business continuity plans that most enterprises had been largely half-baked and rarely, if ever, used… In response, a just-in-time philosophy is giving way to a just-in-case mindset. The past year’s C-suite conversations have been about supply chain risk management. There is a visible strategic shift from operating cost[1]efficient supply chains to engineering efficiently flexible supply chains.
Maersk sees no let up in surging cost of shipping goods
Key Comment(s): “The cost of shipping goods has surged 25-30% since the start of the pandemic due to array of inflationary pressures that are “unlikely to abate in the short term,” and “Clerc said that while congestion is improving in some parts of the world, it is becoming worse in others — for instance, the East Coast of the United States and in Northern Europe.”
Key Comment(s): “…some of the items that are exported out of these ports are critical components to the auto sector like lithium batteries, fully assembled automobiles, as well as a wide variety of auto parts…” , According to Sea-Intelligence, which tracks vessel schedule reliability, only 30-40% of all global schedules are on time. Braun said this congestion will only further exacerbate the lead time in logistical planning.”
Key Comment(s): “…Return of the global shipping crisis. The restart of the Chinese economy will happen rapidly. As Chinese manufacturing resumes at pace in Q3, we will see renewed port congestion, first in China and then in the Americas and Europe.” “…but the risk cost embedded in the past global coordination supply chain model is simply now too high to ignore.”
Key Comment(s): “Reshoring might sound like the solution to the United States’ supply chain woes, but here’s why it is not a cure-all for current and future disruptions.”… “…government efforts to spur reshoring are exactly wrong, say some global trade deep thinkers, especially considering that national policy created more headwinds in the past two years despite the incentives. For starters, there’s an anti-transportation and manufacturing energy policy. Add overall inflation and dramatically rising domestic costs for manufacturing. Tax rates are not going down, either.”

- June 23rd Logistics Risk Report (Attached)
- U.S. logistics business costs rise by 22.4% to $1.85 trillion in 2021
Key Comment(s): Business inventories dropped to near historic lows, but the costs associated with storing, handling and financing these items rose considerably. Inventory-carrying costs rose by 25.9% in 2021, and transportation costs jumped 21.7%. This led to “uneven” supply chains, the report said, and inconsistent product availability for consumers (both in-person and online);
Efforts to increase multi-shoring are expected to accelerate. Companies are seeking to have operations move closer to the U.S. to respond quicker to fluctuating market demands;
Key Comment(s): “As we analyzed the survey data, we compared leading organizations with others to find out how they are different. Our analysis showed two important findings: 1. Organizations can reduce the rate of disruption to their supply chains — something most supply chain leaders dismiss as even a possibility. 2. Organizations can strategically shape which risk events will disrupt them, effectively reducing the number of disruptions they experience”

Key Comment(s): “The past 24 months of disruption have shown the world what CSCOs have long known: Whether it’s natural disasters, resource shortages, global trade conflicts or other unpredictable events, there will always be disruption.”
Key Comment(s): “Bottom line, we find that supply chain pressures have proved to be more persistent, and apparently deep rooted, than we had expected even a few months ago,” strategists led by Global Chief Economist of Citi Research Nathan Sheets wrote in a comprehensive note. “And the Russia-Ukraine conflict seems to be further amplifying the stresses. Given these realities, any hopes of near-term improvement in supply chain conditions have been shattered. The challenges in the months ahead look to be as acute as at any time over the past two years.”
Key Comment(s): I’m not sure I agree with “The annual survey found supply chains were minimally impacted by the Great Resignation. According to the report, 14% of respondents found a new job, up only 2% from last year. The data also revealed career satisfaction remained exceedingly high despite the continuous strain of supply chain disruptions” but I highly agree with this“Amid all these global challenges, it’s reassuring to see supply chain professionals remaining resilient and committed to their vital work and this dynamic industry.”
