18-VA 24: In Loving Memory

colored pencil drawing of a pink flower

Student: Andrea Williams

Advisor: Corianne Thompson

The botanical is called “In Loving Memory”. I chose it because chrysanthemums are a common funeral flower given to those in mourning. It is significant as I lost my great grandfather when I was young and don’t remember much about the funeral aside from these flowers. In many cultures, these flowers represent a long life and rebirth as well as devoted love.

The still life is just called “The Storyteller” after my Papa. When I was young I spent a lot of time at my great grandfathers house, sitting on his porch listening to his stories. He always wore his hat from his sons (my grandfathers) quick stop, had a pocket watch hanging from his pocket, and smoked from his pipe. His favorite drink was Moxie, which I remember him always having an ice cold bottle of at his side. His stories are my favorite childhood memories that I get to hold onto even though he is gone.

16-VA 24: The Grape Vine

mixed media 3-d painting of a picnic
Student: Olivia Lorenzetti
Advisor: Corianne Thompson
The name of this piece is “The Grape Vine,” inspired by the saying “heard it through the grapevine.” this piece is a mixed-media sculpture that includes paint, styrofoam, clay, fabric, and fake plants. it is a painting where I made fruits, rocks, a blanket, a clay pot, and a basket that I glued onto the canvas. every part was hand-painted and glued. I really enjoyed how this piece came out because it reminds me of going on a relaxing picnic in the woods with friends.

15-VA 24: Tangled

ceramic hand with green vines and a white rose

Student: Olivia Lorenzetti
Advisor: Corianne Thompson

This piece I would like to call tangled. it is a “skins” sculpture, where the piece must be covered in another object(s). this was made using my hand sculpted out of cement and wrapped in vines and moss. I sculpted this using a molding mixture and filling in the mold with cement. I held my hand in a position to seem as if it was reaching for something. I then precisely wrapped vines and moss around the sculpture to create a feeling of the hand being held back. I believe this piece turned out fantastic looking like it would perfectly fit into a garden of some sort while giving an ancient but cottage core feeling.

10-VA 24: Foo Fighters

paininting of circles and lines

Student: Cameron Zynel
Advisor: Corianne Thompson

This abstract art piece was inspired by an album cover from the band, “Foo Fighters.” The album cover is called, “The Colour and the Shape” and I think that the title describes what abstract art is well. I drew the shapes on the canvas, then filled them in with acrylic paint. I made sure to use different colors of purple / blue in the background to show how different pictures of this album online look blue, while others look purple.

9-VA 24: Ft. Lauderdale Coastline

paining of a coast line beach with blue sky and clouds

Student: Cameron Zynel
Advisor: Corianne Thompson

I replicated a picture I took on my phone of this coastline in 2018. I thought this was a great landscape to paint, since it had so many interesting parts. From the umbrellas on the beach, to the texture of the clouds, it was a great way to get me to be become more fluent in painting. I used acrylic paints, and painters tape (to get the line between the water and the sky).
