Penn State faculty and program leads, you can now highlight your teaching, advising, mentorship, and research contributing to sustainability engineering and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by including these activities and opportunities for students at Penn State as Sustainability Learning Experiences on the SDG-BASE™ (SDG BAdges for Sustainability Engineering) micro-credential program.

By participating in this program you can recognize your engineering students’ knowledge and achievements in tackling sustainability and help them communicate these skills to future employers by awarding them an SDG-BASE™ micro-credential  in one of three levels: Exploring/Foundational, Exposure/Intermediate, or Experience/Advanced for completing your Sustainability Learning Experience.

Program Requirements
:

1. Lead one or more of the following activities:

  • Teach a Spring, Summer or Fall 2023 course; or
  • Advise/supervise/lead a curricular or extra-curricular student activity, project, club, competition, student organization, study abroad or service learning experience, internship, other; or
  • Mentor research, including NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU); and

2. Activity is offered for engineering students (undergraduates or graduates) in the College of Engineering at University Park and the Commonwealth campuses, or students outside of engineering participating in a College of Engineering Sustainability Learning Experience,  or campus wide programs where engineering students participate; and

3. Activity addresses sustainability engineering, or one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) listed below as part of pilot program:

GOAL 3  Good Health and Wellbeing

GOAL 6  Clean Water and Sanitation

GOAL 7  Affordable and Clean Energy

GOAL 9  Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

GOAL 11  Sustainable Cities and Communities

GOAL 13  Climate Action

; and

4. Commit to completing brief online reporting form once activity is finalized to enable the issuance of the  SDG-BASE™ micro-credential to participating students, and include the “digital evidence” of their sustainability activity provided by each student in the form of a website URL.

Examples of digital evidence are provided in the Getting Started section. Upon submission of the form your Sustainability Learning Experience will be added on the website, and you will receive a link to the reporting form and contact details  for program support.

The SDG-BASE™ Badges are awarded to each participating student through the College of Engineering Credly platform . More information can be found in the Getting Started section.
