Batman: One Bad Day: Catwoman Review

This Batman: One Bad Day: Catwoman. It is Written by G. Willow Wilson and Illustrated by Jamie McKelvie. The Coloring is also done by Jamie McKelvie and the Lettering is done by Clayton Cowles. The cover used above is Illustrated by Jamie McKelvie. The plot follows Selina Kyle, AKA Catwoman. She has tracked down a highly valuable piece of jewelry at an auction house. But this piece of jewelry is connected to Selina’s past and she is determined to get it back. Will her heist be successful and is the jewelry even worth it in the first place?

This book is amazing. I really love everything in it. The story is rather simple but has some really good twists in there. First off, G. Willow Wilson’s characterization of Selina is very good. She is shown as being a rebel, fighting against rich oligarchs for the common people. But she is still flawed. She is steadfast and kind of selfish. But she does learn a lesson by the end. I really like how Selina is kind of a human chameleon. She is able to easily disguise herself in any situation to avoid detection. I think that is a very cool thing and is pretty accurate to Selina’s character. I did see the twist coming but it was still well done.

Spoiler Alert: So there are a few things in this book that are spoilers. First, there is the twist. In the beginning of the story, there is a flashback in which the jewelry Selina wants used to belong to her family. Her mother sold it at a pawn shop, where the buyer stated it was a fake. Selina sees it at the auction house being sold for thousands, so she assumes it was actually real and the pawn shop owner was lying. But no, the jewelry was fake, and it was sold there by a fraudster. I like this twist because it is a good reversal on Selina’s own flaws while still pushing the theme of corrupt individuals.

Another Spoiler Alert: Batman also makes an appearance in this book. I really like this appearance because it exemplifies the relationship between Batman and Catwoman. They are opposites of each other. They should hate each other. But they really care for each other and they’re different paths are just annoyances. The contrast is what makes the relationship and this book gets that completely. It is well done.

The art for this book is spectacular. This art style is more realistic, but it isn’t really gritty. I also really appreciate how Jamie McKelvie draws Selina as more muscular then she usually portrayed as. I have appreciated how more artists have been drawing muscular female comic book characters because it just makes more sense. Having comic book characters such as Wonder Woman, Black Widow, and Supergirl being super skinny just doesn’t feel right to me. So seeing this is quite appreciated from me. The coloring is very striking and really brings up emotional moments. Overall, the art is amazing.

Overall, this book is fantastic. The story is fun and understands Selina as a character. The art is elastic but dynamic. It is just a really good book. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Catwoman.
