Internet Stars: Street Style Edition

Recently, the new phenomenon of street style has taken over the fashion industry, as models and style icons show off looks that are more relatable and wearable to the general public. Many blogs appeared around 2005-2009 that snapped people in their personal style, out and about in cities around the world. Since then, these blogs have gained a lot of attention from netizens and experts in the field of fashion. Although I usually come to class looking like a hobo, I’ve always been interested in relatable style. So this week I thought I would list my top three favorite street style bloggers and see how they got their start via the Internet.

  1. Song of Style – Aimee Song is the beautiful and fabulous style icon behind the very popular style blog, Song of Style. Her sense of style is a mix of bold, colorful, and Californian cool that is easily applicable to real-life looks. Song started her blog back in 2008 when she was studying Interior Architecture, and since then it has quickly taken off. Her site currently receives an average of 4 million views per month and been featured in a number of high-end magazines. Although she still has a full time job as an interior designer, Aimee Song’s street style blog has landed her collaborations with numerous designers, magazines, and clothing lines. I love her blog (or instagram account) because she brings in a sense of chic personality to all of her looks without being too out there. Fashion is a hard medium for many people to relate to because it is sometimes just too intense. Aimee creates looks that are achievable and relatable for the modern woman.

  1. Facehunter- Run by photographer and author Yvan Rodic, Facehunter captures the stylish citizens of metropolises around the world, from the typical locales of Paris and New York City to the exotic cities of Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. What I love about Facehunter is that it goes beyond the fashion. The individuals who are featured somehow perfectly match their style seems the capture their personalities, but in unexpected ways. Mainstream fashion trends seems to dominate the populace, but Rodic photographs how easily character can be translated to style without falling into the majority.

  1. The Sartorialist- Easily the most popular and iconic blog on this list, The Sartorialist was the blog that really turned street style into the phenomenon it is today. Scott Shuman has been capturing the sartorial elegance of denizens in NYC and throughout Europe since 2005, paving the way for the thousands of style bloggers that followed after. His prominence in the fashion industry has even landed him on Time magazine’s Top 100 Design Influencers. I believe that the reason behind The Sartorialist’s success lies in the organic style behind his subjects. He photographs those who are not dressed for attention, but those to reveal their sense of fashion in subtleties. In a very much documentary style, Shuman captures the inner spirit of his subjects, not only their fashion sense.

I also dress like a hobo, but I actually really enjoy clothing. Of course the clothing I wear isn’t exactly designer (shoutout to Target and Plato’s Closet for being great and affordable, I still am really intrigued by fashion blogs and magazines. I’ll definitely check out some of these blogs. Thanks for sharing!

Cool post and great passion blog topic! I like the idea of street style because its practical- Aimee looks comfortable but cute and warm with that jacket, especially during this time of year!
Have you checked out http://www.manrepeller.com? Trendy fashion website that I browse from time to time.

  3. Olga Dorabiala

I love clothes, and I love fashion. I regularly follow fashion blogs and indulge in the pictures. I really liked this post, because it let me know about some bloggers I hadn’t known about before. The things people wear can say a lot about them. I often wish I could pull off the unique and crazy looks I see online. Style really is a form of art.

  4. Lauren Pease

I really enjoyed reading your post! Every day I dread getting dressed because I know I will end up in some version of a plain sweater or sweatshirt. Reading your blog was really interesting because I really do love fashion, I just don’t happen to be very good at putting things together myself! My favorite style that you posted was that of Aimee Song because I definitely could see myself wearing some of those outfits!

  5. Alexander Chan

Pragya, don your old sweatpants and embrace your inner hobo. It’s the comfortable choice! I like the idea of street fashion as I’ve often wondered who in their right mind would walk onto the streets wearing some of the stuff you see on t.v. Also, great blog. I’ve learned about several bloggers even if this isn’t my favorite topic.
