It seems that nowadays that EVERYONE has a cellphone. Even my 8 year old cousin has one and I received one when I was only 10 years old. But have you ever thought about how it could potentially affect your health? I know I have heard rumors of cellphones causing cancer so I decided to get to the bottom of this myth before something bad could happen to my loved ones or myself.
The main problem with mobile phones is that they send out radio waves in all different directions in order for them to work. This means that even when you are talking on the phone the waves are being directed towards your head. An article by Net Doctor explains that, “The problem is that when this happens they are absorbed into the body’s tissues, and this is why some studies have indicated they may potentially increase the risk of brain cancer.” This is scary to me because I know I talk on the phone a lot, but imagine people who are constantly on the phone for their jobs. Their risk is a lot more than mine.
So all in all, do cell phones cause cancer. This is a heated debate that has been going on for a while now. Some say yes, some say no. Net Doctor also says, “The latest research, led by the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Denmark, found no evidence that the risk of brain tumours was increased by mobile phone use.
The study followed 358,403 mobile phone subscribers over an 18-year period and suggested that even those who had used a mobile phone for 13 years or more did not have an increased risk.” However the long term affect it has on children who use cell phones has not been analyzed yet because cellphones are relatively new to society.
The National Cancer Institute says that, “Studies thus far have not shown a consistent link between cell phone use and cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues of the head or neck. More research is needed because cell phone technology and how people use cell phones have been changing rapidly.”
With this information, we can not conclude exactly that cell phones do cause cancer. However, we should be wary of the possibilities and try to use our phones at a minimum if possible.
People love to be scared. They go to haunted houses, ghost hunting trips, and watch scary movies just to get a thrill. I can remember being scared for like by the movie the 6th sense after sneaking in on my parents watching it. I have hated scary movies ever since. But can scary movies actually have effects on your health beyond just making you scared for a period of time?
According to Lifestyle Lounge, the long lasting affects of watching scary movies includes anxiety, sleepiness, fear, and phobias. Anxiety is a visible affect of watching horror movies and can even linger into adulthood. Regarding sleepiness, Lifestyle Lounge says, “An immediate psychological effect of scary movies on the minds of people is lack of sleep. The person may find an inability to sleep through the night for few days, even months after watching the movie. He/she may need to use a nightlight while sleeping. The thoughts of the horrifying characters appeared in the horror movie and the situations may haunt him/her, leading to sleepless nights. This condition last for a week to even a year.” The lack of sleep can affect your overall health and quality of life. The fear and phobias come from the playing of the scary movie in your head and makes you fearful of things relating to it and eventually can turn into a phobia if it is not caught in time.
In an article by Suite 101, it says that, “According to Glenn Sparks, a professor of communication at Purdue University, the physical reactions to horrifying images include sweaty palms, tense muscles, a drop of several degrees in skin temperature, a spike in blood pressure and an increase in heart rate of up to 15 beats per minute. Those are some pretty incredible changes considering you’re simply sitting still viewing images.”
All in all, if you can not handle watching scary movies without any of these side affects happening, you should not watch these types of movies. They can be bad for your health short term and bad for your psychological health long term.
Recently, my roommate started to take cinnamon tablets to help her keep off the freshman 15. I always thought this was a weight loss myth. I’ve heard people say to sprinkle some cinnamon on your food or put a cinnamon stick in your water, but I never thought it would make any significant affect. I decided to do some research to find out if cinnamon tablets can really help and see if I should be taking them too.
According to Livestrong, “According to a study published by “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” cinnamon has been linked to weight loss because the spice stimulates, or increases, the metabolism of glucose. Glucose, or blood sugar, is a main source of energy and affects how hungry or energetic you feel.” The Livestrong article also tells some of the benefits cinnamon can have. It says, “A benefit of cinnamon is its ability to delay food from progressing through the digestive system. Food is delayed in the stomach and, as a result, leaves you feeling full for a longer period of time. This results in a reduction of hunger and causes you to eat less. In addition to satiation, the active compound in cinnamon is methyl hydroxy chalcone polymer (MHCP) and works to increase glucose metabolism, according to the USDA. Your blood sugar level determines whether you burn fat or store it. Increasing your glucose metabolism through the use of cinnamon tablets burns excess glucose, which is stored as fat in your body. In short, feeling less hungry and burning excess glucose more effectively equates to eating less and losing weight.”
Taking cinnamon tablets seems so appealing after reading these amazing benefits it has! So how much mg of these tablets should we be using per day? Buzzle says, “For better results, it is best to consume cinnamon in the form of capsules or pills. – teaspoon of powdered cinnamon is equivalent to 2,000 mg. Taking 4 capsules of 500 mg daily, that is, one with breakfast, two along with lunch, and last one with dinner should be fine.”
What do you guys think? Do you think this sounds legit and would you personally try doing this to lose weight? I think this is the most natural weight loss pill you could ever find. We should still exercise regularly and eat well, but taking a cinnamon tablet will definitely move the weightloss process along quicker.
It sounds silly, but getting your heart broken affects your health in many different ways. It starts as emotional pain and can even lead to physical suffering. This journey begins from the second you say your goodbyes. Your adrenal glands start producing adrenaline and cortisol. Your blood pressure also starts to sky- rocket. Your stress hormomes depend on how bad the break up was. The worse the breakup, the more stress hormones working.
Another reaction to a breakup is how your brains activity starts to increase greatly. According to abcnews , “It’s like clockwork: Your eyes hit that photo of the two of you and–boom!–awful stomach pit. You feel sick, yet you can’t look away. That’s because the moment you saw his face, blood started rushing to your brain’s pleasure center, the ventral tegmental area. These are all the good times talking. The command center for craving and longing also lights up. It demands attention–one reason you’re obsessed with driving by your ex’s house, stalking his Facebook page, or trying to replace him with some other satisfier.” Its scary how the brain makes us feel such strong, crazy emotions over a person.
According to Dr. Sinatra, heartbreak from a break up can actually do damage to your heart. It states, “The reason is that heartbreak is a stress that sets into motion your body’s natural “fight or flight” response. When your body enters into this response, the released adrenaline raises your blood pressure and increases your heart rate and breathing. If your body remains in this alarm mode for any length of time, you become prone to stress-producing conditions, ranging from aching neck muscles and headaches to ulcers, allergies, diminished sexual desire, and heart disease.
Heartbreak can be tough. But we need to understand that no relationship is worth physically harming your body through a terrible heartbreak. We should remember to remain strong so little damage is done to our fragile hearts.
Many people debate this topic each morning. Both have many health and beauty benefits, but which one is really better for you over all?
Coffee has many benefits regarding to health, beauty, and protecting from diseases and even depression. According to SELF , “Coffee may protect against skin cancer, according to one study, by absorbing harmful rays and promoting cell repair. Another study found that a cup a day lowered the risk of non-melanoma skin cancer by nearly 11 percent.” In addition to amazing health benefits, coffee can also have an affect on your skin. It is said that having a cup of coffee can decrease cellulite because the caffeine increases microcirculation which helps smooth the surfaces of skin. SELF also claims that , “A study found that drinking three cups of coffee daily lowered women’s relative risk of depression by 15 percent; 20 percent for those who nabbed a fourth cup.” Its amazing how even one cup of coffee a day can do all of this and much more!
Tea is equally as impressive when it comes to its many benefits. SELF says, “Tea contains killer antioxidants. Green tea is thought to contain the highest concentration of polyphenols, antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, which damage cells and contribute to cancer. They protect against skin damage, too!” In addition to preventing cancer, it can also prevent Parkinson’s disease. Green tea’s phytochemicals protect neurons that produce dopamine in the brain, which may help prevent Parkinson’s disease.
For beauty benefits from tea, Jones says that, “Whether it is stress or your pores need some purging, sip away calmly knowing your skin will clear up. Green tea contains catechins which is known to help the reduction of sebum glands by regulating hormonal levels.” Jones also says that “There is nothing cute about a bloating and gas infused tummy. This can come from a number of things. Green tea will help keep your digestive system moving and it aids in weight loss. With eating clean and drinking tea, the slim waste line will trump the bloating in no time.” Those are just a couple of the beauty benefits that tea has.
So lets answer the question. Which one is better for you really, coffee or tea? The answer is BOTH. Coffee and Tea balance eachothers benefits out, so it is hard to tell which is truly better for you than the other. It is important to drink a cup of either one of these beverages a day to get your health, mind, and beauty in tact.
Unless you are living under a rock or are way too into your studies to turn on a TV or go on the internet, you have heard of Hurricane Sandy (or Frankenstorm). Millions of people have been affected by this grand hurricane. Over 60 people in the Caribbean have died from it. The U.S. has suffered 18 deaths over 7 different states. Millions of people ranging from South Carolina all the way to Ohio are without power. New York and New Jersey were especially hit hard. People’s favorite vacation spots such as L.B.I. and the Jersey shore have been almost completely washed away. This has been devastating to those along the east coast.
So the obvious question comes to mind, “Why is there a massive hurricane in late October?” Researchers say that it is from an indirect cause of global warming. According to US News , “You can’t say [global warming] caused any single event, but when we start to see a trend like this, I think it shows that there’s a good chance these hurricanes wouldn’t be happening without warming,” said one of the report’s authors, Aslack Grinsted. “What I show is only correlation, but it’s purely consistent with the hypothesis that warming goes along with more frequent, large hurricanes.”
Skeptics of global warming say that this can’t be true because there are numerous variables that go into creating such a grand storm and it is impossible to prove that global warming was the sole cause.
According to the Huffington Post, they confidently tell their readers that global warming systematically caused the hurricane. Systematic causation basically means that it is indirectly caused. They say, “Global warming systemically caused the huge and ferocious Hurricane Sandy. And consequently, it systemically caused all the loss of life, material damage, and economic loss of Hurricane Sandy. Global warming heated the water of the Gulf and Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in greatly increased energy and water vapor in the air above the water. When that happens, extremely energetic and wet storms occur more frequently and ferociously. These systemic effects of global warming came together to produce the ferocity and magnitude of Hurricane Sandy.”
Whether we believe that global warming was the cause of this devastating event or not, we can all agree that it has been a living night -mare for those who went through it. Continue to keep those affected in your prayers.
All throughout my high school years, I danced on my high school’s dance team and for three other competitive dance teams through my organization called Pittsburgh Poison. I used to practice every day a week and most of the time multiple times per day. Every year right at the peak of my dance season where we are practicing a ton in preparation for very important dance competitions, I would always get injured. After waking up super early to go to school then going straight to multiple practices each night, an injury is bound to happen. Due to my lack of sleep and overuse of my tired muscles I would get injured.
According to Medpage Today , “Insufficient sleep — defined by the CDC and the National Sleep Foundation as less than 8 hours per night among high school students — is epidemic in this age group, Milewski said, pointing to a CDC study that found that about 68.9% of high school students were getting an inadequate amount of sleep.”
To explore the possible connection between insufficient sleep and sports injury, the researchers surveyed student athletes from Harvard-Westlake School, a private school in Los Angeles that includes grades 7 through 12. The average age of 112 students who completed the online questionnaires — 58 females and 54 males — was 15, ranging from 12 to 18. The questionnaires included questions on the number of sports played, the time committed to sports both in and out of school, the use of private coaches or strength training, sleep, and enjoyment from athletic participation. The percentage of respondents who reported sleeping less than 8 hours per night was 76.7%. Over a 21-month period, 57% of the athletes sustained injuries that were recorded by athletic trainers at the school; 38% of all athletes suffered multiple injuries.
In another article by Science Daily , “Hours of sleep per night was significantly associated with a decreased likelihood of injury, according to the study results.”
In conclusion, young athletes should definitely be getting their sleep if they are very active with sports. I wish I took this into consideration when I was dancing all the time. I could have saved myself from many injuries.
When you go to look into buying a new puppy, the first thing you do is ask the breeder to have a look at the potential new puppy’s parents. You want to see how your puppy is going to look and how it may behave. More often than not, your puppy’s parents have breaded with multiple partners beyond the pregnancy they are in now. This stays true for the majority of the animal kingdom. It is a rarity to find a completely monogamous relationship among all species of animals. After doing some research, I was able to find some animal species who take part of monogamous relationships for the most part. This does not mean that they do not cheat on their significant others.
According to the Huffington Post
, “Whether you think their relationships are romantic or not is up to you, but a number of creatures — from primates to birds to marine life — have found that choosing to be monogamous is more beneficial than having multiple partners.”
A very heartwarming example is Gibbons. Gibbons are apart of the 6% of primates that are monogamous. Gibbons live in small monogamous families, with up to four off spring. The females are in charge of the family. Gibbon couples also tend to sing duets together. How cute!
There are many other relationships in the animal kingdom considered monogamous. Such as wolves, swans, Brolga Cranes, French Angel fish, termites, penguins, barn owl, shingleback skink, wolf eel, and black vultures. It is hard to imagine that these are the only species of animals in the entire animal kingdom that maintain their monogamy. Even though they are labeled to be in faithful relationships, this is not all together true. They are not always sexually exclusive. Many animals that form in pairs to mate often regularly engage in sexual activities with partners other than their primary mate.
According to TODAY relationships
, “Nature wants one thing, and what it wants are babies,” Jeffrey Kluger, TIME magazine’s science editor, told TODAY’s Meredith Vieira on Wednesday. “It also wants lots of them and it wants variety, because the greater the genetic variety, the greater the likelihood that the babies are going to survive to adulthood and do well. So even when we’ve had children, we have some very primal software that keeps telling us, ‘Look around.’ ” “For one species of flatworm that lives in the gills of freshwater fish, monogamy is the rule. But for humans and every other living creature, biologists believe nature prefers that man and beast have multiple sexual partners.”
This is the sad but true fact of the world is that only 1 out of 1,250,000 species in the entire animal kingdom are completely monogamous. Monogamy is almost a myth for animals . It is better to be aware of this now before we live the rest of our lives naive to the fact that animals are born cheaters. Its only natural.
As teenagers, we can all admit to be a little bit obsessed with social media. From Facebook, to twitter, and even online gaming, we are all guilty to spending way too much time on these websites. But have you ever thought about how detrimental these websites could potentially hurt you? One could be so obsessed that they drop everything in their “real” life for these sources of media. According to Psychology Today “One of my clients, Lisa, 25, a socially anxious software engineer, hadn’t been to a party, let alone on a date, in months. She was far too busy racking up points on a new online multiplayer game. “I’m lonely most of the time, she confessed “but when I get lost in the game, I forget all about how terrible I feel. “”
This social awkwardness created by her obsession with internet has created a term called “cybercellibate”. We can all admit that the occasional night alone is nice from time to time, but when these occasions turn into weeks or months all because of the computer is when the term can be applied to a person. These people are so intensely fixated on their computers that they will even throw away opportunities of friendship, romance, and intimacy just to feel the rush that they get from being on the web.
Sometimes providing sex, affection or comfort or sometimes withholding the very rewards we long for–games, pornography, and social networking always offer some kind of payoff. That’s where the trouble starts. Strangely enough, our brains don’t seem to care if the thrill comes from great sex, drugs, or an epic win in World of Warcraft; they all cause massive amounts of dopamine, a feel-good neurotransmitter, to start spilling into our brain’s reward center. Dopamine tends to keep us chasing after the same thrill again and again, regardless of the consequences. So while gaming or pornography can’t ever cure our loneliness, over time they do become an incredibly addictive salve–and that makes it easier and easier to turn away from people and back to cyberspace.
According to Bright Hub , “These are statistics that show how the Internet can affect you in different ways, from no affect to severe affect;
(1) Academic/ Mild 2%, Moderate 40%, Severe 58%
(2) Relationship/ Mild 2%, Moderate 45%, Severe 53%
(3) Financial/ Mild 10%, Moderate 38%, Severe 52%
(4) Occupational/ Mild 15%, Moderate 34%, Severe 51%
(5) Physical/ None 75%, Mild 15%, Moderate 10%, Severe 0%”.
As you can see, the internet takes a toll on all different aspects of our lives. Its impact becomes more severe the more obsessed and more time you spend using it. It is important to remember that physical contact is more important than an adrenaline rush through gaming or sending out a tweet. We must use the internet in moderation before we reach the point of being cybercellibate- a unpopular and tarnishing label.
Red. The most romantic color in the world. Its the color of our beating hearts as well as the color of the millions of roses distributed to lovers each valentines day. According to Science Daily, “Through five psychological experiments, Andrew Elliot, professor of psychology, and Daniela Niesta, post-doctoral researcher, demonstrate that the color red makes men feel more amorous toward women. And men are unaware of the role the color plays in their attraction.”
The study looked at men’s reactions to photographs of women under a variety of color presentations. In one of the experiments, test subjects looked at a woman’s photo framed by a border of either red or white and answered a series of questions. Such as, “How pretty do you think this person is?” Other experiments did the same thing but with different colored frames like gray, green, or blue.
Although this aphrodisiacal effect of red may be a product of societal conditioning alone, the authors argue that men’s response to red more likely stems from deeper biological roots. Research has shown that nonhuman male primates are particularly attracted to females displaying red. Female baboons and chimpanzees, for example, redden conspicuously when nearing ovulation, sending a clear sexual signal designed to attract males.
“The red effect extends only to males and only to perceptions of attractiveness. Red did not increase attractiveness ratings for females rating other females and red did not change how men rated the women in the photographs in terms of likability, intelligence or kindness.” According to the article in Science Daily.
Ladies, if you want to attract a man then you should throw on a red dress! Skip the hours you spend on doing your hair and picking out the perfect outfit. Red is the answer to your love problems.
