Initial Blog Post: Science and I Aren’t Compatible

Hello Everyone! My name is Carolyn and I am a sophomore here at Penn State University! I am enrolled in the College of Communications and plan on applying for the Advertising major that they offer.  I am also working on a minor in Spanish!  To be completely honest, I am taking Science 200 because I heard that it was one of the easier science classes for students who do not like science.  Additionally, This will fulfill my last 3 natural science credits that I am required to take.  After this, I am done with science! WOO! Some people may think I am way too excited to be done with science but my past experiences with science led me to strongly dislike the subject.  I could not be a science major because, in the past, all of my science teachers had not been good at actually teaching the concepts that they were supposed to teach us.  In high school, all of my science teachers just assumed that we knew everything they knew about science and never explained anything in depth.  This left me confused and frustrated with the subject because I was so lost! Especially with Chemistry and Physics, I felt like those subjects were totally different languages!  I always enjoyed reading and writing way more than doing math and science because I always felt that reading and writing left me room for in depth thought and with science, I felt like you were penalized for not having the exact answer that the teacher was looking for.  I liked discussing book topics and doing creative group work.  I also just appreciate nature and its beauty for what it is and I don’t feel like I have to know ever single scientific thing behind all of it to appreciate its beauty. For a long time, I wanted to be a nurse because my mom was one and I thought it was such a great job.  However, when I realized that science and my personality just weren’t meant to get along, I became more interested in a business major but a more creative business major: Advertising. I am a social network junky and I love exploring why people are so intrigued by the social networking world.  I am going to join the Advertising Club at Penn State this year so that I can become even more familiar with Advertising.

I felt the same with teachers in my high school who taught science. It always seemed like they taught to just hear themselves while no one really understood them. They also never really went in depth on the interesting topics. Chemistry and physics are like another language and I think that’s why they’re such hard subjects to comprehend. I read a really good article on why science might be hard to learn or even harder to teach. Click Here for article link.

    Hi Carolyn!
My name is Laura Smith and I too am in the college of communications. I am also a sophomore and am contemplating taking the advertising route for the Public Relations major. Have you looked into any courses relating to graphic design? I am looking into possibly minoring in this and am curious as to what the classes will be like. If you have an interest at all check out the website here http://graphicdesign.psu.edu/ and let me know what you think!

I also feel your pain with the science courses! I was a veterinary major and I felt like I was put through hell and back with the material. Chemistry tests seemed like they were also in a foreign language to me, so like you a jumped out of those courses as soon as possible. (Plus blogging an critical thinking is ten times more interesting than boring chemistry equations).
